Q: Re-Formatted MBP and installed Mountain Lion !

Hi All, i have just successfully Migrated my 4 year old MBP  to a new "slimline" MBP

I am now preparing my old MBP for handing down to my eldest daughter, i have Re-Formatted and restarted it with Command-R  i am now downloading and installing Mountain Lion.

My question being next :-  what do i have to do next, to be able to get El-Capitan installed, which is afterall the version of OS X that it had before i re-formatted it. ????

You tell her to download and install El Capitan from her Apple ID. Except for needing to be logged in with a different Apple ID, the process is the same as the one you used to upgrade it originally.

You might want to read this section of the licensing agreement:

    B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, it is not transferable.

If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from

the Apple-branded hardware before doing so, and you may restore your system to the version of

the Apple operating system software that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original

Apple OS”) and permanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware,

provided that: the transfer must include all of the Original Apple OS, including all its component

parts, printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS,

full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the party

receiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of the

    Original Apple OS license.

So, you are doing the right thing: erasing the drive and reinstalling the original OS. Simply let her download/install El Capitan using her own Apple ID so the license will be tied to her, the new owner.

Thank you chaps, every reply was most helpful, i couldnt select anyone for a "correct answer" !

One final query, Will the Migration from a Windose Lap Top (with a dead battery) be any easier/quicker if i updated to El-Capitan first ?

No I don't think it will matter.

Another option is to put all your docs, etc. for you Windows machine on an external drive. You can format the external drive to NTFS and use Paragon NTFS for Mac to allow the Mac to read and write the information. That way you will have all your windows information available if you need it. You may find that you don't need all of it.

Paragon  NTFS for Mac - Write / read access to NTFS under OS X El Capitan:  Paragon NTFS for Mac® 14
