Q: iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

Looking around a bit more about this, it appears as though this is a fairly common issue a lot of people are having. Other forums hare numerous threads detailing people's issues with this.

I agree this sounds like a common problem. I had a similar issue with my iPad Air when I bought it. A software update finally fixed it. I have been suprised at how Apple keeps replacing iPads for me. I did set up as new for them before I took it in and I was still having the issue.

Sorry, but "fairly common" means what? These forums are like the emergency room at a hospital, so of course, everyone has a problem. How many iPad Pros have been sold? And what is the percentage of devices experiencing this problem?

Since I am unable to reproduce this issue, my suggestion would still be to delete all third party apps. As well, I would be closing some apps so not everything is running in the background continuously. It may be quite powerful, but it is still a tablet with a limited amount of RAM and the processor is not the same as is installed in a high end iMac or Mac Pro.

Numerous means I was able to find at least a dozen threads with multiple people within each thread indicating they had an issue. Even if it is a 3rd party app causing this issue and not a RAM or other resource allocation issue, etc, there must be a bug in iOS allowing the app to crash springboard / the iPad instead of just crashing the app.

My iPad Pro 9.7 32GB is less than 15 days old and has exhibited this behavior at least twice now. I'm up to date on iOS. I suspect it could be a video streaming app that might be causing the iPad to temporarily conk out and return back to normal like a football player coming back to play after a concussion.

To name a few, I have charter spectrum app, Vevo, YouTube, angry birds. Last time, my iPad had a concussion, I was looking at Chyna's (deceased wrestler) images on safari. I also had 5-6 apps running in the background. It would help if everybody here mentioned what they were doing when they experienced the glitch.

Bluetooth was also on and connected to Apple Pencil. Hey Siri is also enabled. An hour or so before the glitch, I captured a 30 second video in 4K.

Not sure what you are referring to with springboard? Are you talking about the home screen?

    And what is "Full"?

This is on a new 9.7" iPad Pro? They've only been available for three weeks now (if you bought it on the first day). You should have simply taken it back to the store within 14 days for a full refund.

A Springboard crash is one that takes me back to the home screen without entering the passcode. A full crash is a reboot. I don't want a refund. I already sold my previous IPad Air. I want something that isn't going to crash. Constant restoring takes hours.

I agree I have exchanged twice because that is all Apple seems to be able to do. I just want one that works. A 750 dollar tablet shouldn't be crashing. I think it is probably software so hopefully an update will fix it.

That is all Apple's store "geniuses" know how to do - restore, if that doesn't fix, exchange.  I am almost certain this is a software issue on the 9.7" pro, for me it happens when switching apps.  I did a restore today to see if it is any different but am not optimistic.

I Ave an IPad Pro 9.7 With wifi and cellular access.  Mine has not randomly cut off and restarted.  Mine didn't like the power cord and didn't like any in the store.  This occurred when I tried to charge it after having it 3 days.  Apple replaced it.  No other problems, but I'm not installing update 9.3.1.  "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", is my Apple mantra.

APple ply will replace it if they can't fix it.  Right now, because it's so new, you won't get a refurbished one, but don't wait too long.

I Agree. Note the activity that led to the glitch.

Please mention if you used the camera to capture a high resolution 4K video. I could be wrong but that might be it.

Did not record video before the crashes.  It is always when switching apps, and almost always when pressing the home button when in safari.

I dont use Safari.  The one Apple app that truly *****...to me.  Not compatible with many non-Apple apps.  Many Safari is causing the shutdowns.  See if it happens with Google.
