Q: Photos Completely Useless to Me

The hype over Photos in the months preceding its release was that it would be a powerhouse app, the only one you would ever need, a melding of Aperture and iPhotos of all the best parts.  What a load of crap!

I have tens of thousands of photos organized by File Name, which was imported in some Metadata mess, but which I can not sort my photos by, and which I cannot view as a "Title".  My whole library hinges on the File Name and my ability to organize my photos my File Name.

Stars: I use Stars to signify priority of my photos, and when a priority level of a photo changes, so does the Star rating.  I don't want to have to dream up Key Words in place of my stars.

In the past I have imported photos from both my iPhone and my camera, imported them into iPhoto, deleted them from my iPhone, exported them to an external folder where at my leisure I carefully edit and assign the appropriate File Name to each photo, once complete, the Photos were brought back into iPhoto ... File Names and all.

They were then sorted and organized by File Name ... do you see a pattern here?

I need to view the File Name as a title so that I know which photo is which, because on the surface many look so very similar.  I then synch select photos back to iCloud and into various albums on my iPad.  Had a system down with iPhoto, and apparently it is a system which does not exist on Photos, which apparently I need to use now to get my photos synched back onto my iPad and iPhone as needed.

Unless someone can show me that I'm just stupid and not figuring this out, and screwing around trying to deal with this is costing me time and money I don't have ... this new Photos app is completely useless to me and Apple ought to consider trashing this thing, bring back iPhotos on the Mac and convert iOS to iPhotos on iPhone and iPad.

There ... I've said it.  I've said what everyone else is thinking.

I had iPhotos version 9.4.3 (so it is not up to date at v9.6.1)

Did you buy iPhoto as part of iLife '11, or did it come preinstalled on a Mac with System installer disks?  Then your iPhoto version is not associate with your AppleID and does not show at the App Store in your Purchase history.  The update to iphoto 9.4.5 would have created this association, because it is an App Store-only update. But it is too late for that now.

You are correct, Photos app is useless for anything other than sharing with family,

That's exactly what it's designed for.

Incidentally, my annoyance was because i used iPhotos to organise my iphone (photos).

Photos seems to have removed the ability to display and manage whats on iphone.

Is it because i cant find it, or is it actually missing in Photos?

For what it's worth Photos can display photos imported from your iPhone.  It's just not in Events anymore:

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.  This will change with the release of Photos 2 with El Capitan this fall.  That will allow the sorting by date or title, ascending or descending.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

To anyone that is having problems with Photos (I had a TON) you can call Apple and they will work out your problems with you!
I tried it yesterday, and the tech told me that they KNOW there are a bunch of us unhappy and confused with this new Photos, and as such you can call and get FREE help on their main customer support line. You may have to wait a bit to get through (25-45 minutes), but they'll work out your problems with you. They worked with me for almost 45 minutes, helped me and listened to me gripe about the missing drag and drop feature. Just say your problem is with PHOTOS and you'll get through (don't have to have apple care or the one time fee for help).

I agree. Mac Photos is not an advance as far as I can see. It just doesn't work very well. Today I spent quite a while creating new albums and organizing my recent holiday photos into the albums. Later, I tried to add some more photos to one of the albums and they didn't go into it. To make matters worse, I found a whole lot of photos from another album sitting there. In addition, it is very hard to find information on how to use various features. I am frustrated. I am sure Apple could do a lot better.

File Names people ... It's as simple as File Names as Titles

Why did it take all that drivel to get to your one question, how to get file names under the thumbnail?  You should read this before your next post: Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question

To answer your question all you need to do is use the Applescript in this user tip to add the file names under each thumbnail: Script: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename w/Extension

You can download a compiled version of the script as an application from this tutorial site: P01 - Applescripts from Photos’ User Tips Compiled as Applications
