Q: iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

I use chrome and it happens with it. I am on my third iPad they have all done this. I think it is software and hopefully it ill be fixed with an update. I can't believe I got 3 bad iPads unless they are all bad and Apple needs to fix something. I had this happen when I got my iPad air and a software update finally fixed it.

Well it's been a few days now and no more restarts, though that may just be luck of the draw and not a sign that the issue was solved. Oddly enough, I haven't seen anyone report this issue with the cellular versions - curious if it's just dumb luck or it's a problem limited to just the wifi model.

Well mine just did it again off of a restore.  Bummer.  I am so happy with this screen that I hate to think about exchanging it. I just wish I knew if it was hardware or software that is causing it.  It feels like a software bug.  Has it crashed for anyone when using an app or only when switching?

Not really. I have the 128 GB WiFi model and it hasn't misbehaved in any way. I do not use Chrome or anything Google and I do not download videos (except to play/screen mirror TV channel content to my HD TV).

While your feedback is appreciated, it does little to nothing to aid in the situation as a lack of results is not a result. Since it's clear there is either some coding or hardware issue, as the iPad should not be restarting due to any app crash, it could be that you just aren't triggering whatever action is causing this to happen for the rest of us, etc.

My 256GB wifi just restarted after a prolonged period of normal behavior. Was exiting Safari at the time.

You had to go mention iPad with cellular eh?

Sure enough, after 2 weeks ownership my iPad Pro 9.7, 32GB wifi+cell dumped back to the Apple logo screen followed by login screen.

Happened only once thus far, I was using Safari on wifi, battery level at 96%.

Again happened only once but it was/is disconcerting.

Just happened again to me. I was going back to mail from safari and it went to the apple logo then the lock screen. I did not have to put my pass code in just fingerprint. Most of the time it just shows the apple logo then the home screen.

Being on your 3rd  sure hope it's software related as you wrote unless our iPads are fitted with a bad component from the same batch.

My husband's and my new iPads do the same.  Except mine is a white logo screen and requires a hard reset, and my husband's does the black screen that resets itself.

I'm assuming it's software.  I also have a few apps that crash as well.

I know what you mean I am talking to second tier support will see what he comes up with next. I just restored via itunes and set up as new again this has not helped before but trying it again. Thats about all Apple seems to be able to do other than assuring me this should not be happening. I will have to see if they replace it again. I really think at this point its is a problem with ios for the ipad pro but can't prove it one way or another.

I dont think I'm going to get mine replaced unless it becomes unusable.  Or unless it becomes clear that it isn't the software.  We have a whole year warranty.....

I would suggest that everyone who is having the crashes turns on diagnostic and usage data sharing to Apple so they can get the crash dumps...after a while you can turn it back off if you are concerned about Apple getting the information, but it might help for now.

it occurs on my iPad Pro 9.3.1, 9.7 device also.  I'd guess that it happens a couple times a day.  Like you, it's hard to duplicate. I think ithe most times it happens to me is when I use the new 'Back to xxxx' option on the top left of the screeN. Like if I go from an email to an app that's in the email and then press the 'Back to Mail' is some times crashes.    So, I think it must be software and will be fixed some time!!     Fingers crossed!!
