I stopped using Pages when Apple 'downgraded' this former invaluable cheap dtp program to version 5.....  So I may be wrong and stand to be corrected by other more knowledgeable people, but the only way I can see to turn a list into a table is to insert a table with the appropriate number of columns and rows (or delete the superfluous ones afterwards) and past in your list. For example:Screen Shot 2016-04-24 at 10.21.51.jpg

    Which version of Pages?

    In Pages '09:

select the text > Menu > Format > Table > Convert Text to Table

    In Pages 5.xx:

select the text > Menu > Format < nothing there > look in Toolbar > nothing there > look in Sidebar > nothing there > right click > Contextual menu > nothing there > ring Apple Support > they don't use Apple's software > go to Apple Community Forum > don't mention what version you are using > get told to just use Pages '09 and get the job done

If you insist on Pages 5 there is a more convoluted method:

Make sure the text is separated by tabs and paragraph returns > NB how many in the list and how many columns > select the text > Copy > create a Table > change the Table to the same number of columns and rows > select exactly the same number of columns and rows > Paste

Peter, that's a better description of what I said to do in Pages 5.

As to 'insisting' on using this version, Demosthenes probably has no choice as I guess that he, like me, is unable to return any more to the previous (better) version9.

<rant>As someone who has used Macs for thirty years, the current fashion for dumbing down Mac OS applications is making me weep.  Imagine, for example, that you aspire to do a booklet in Pages 5: you no longer have the option to make the margins in left and right pages different.  The last time I did a booklet for a friend I ended up using Microsoft Word! </rant>

    What is stopping you?

I am running both Pages '09 and Pages 5.6.1 on OSX 11.10.4.

Pages 5.6.1 only does one thing a bit better, and that is drawing so long as it is not too complex, so I mostly keep it round to test all the problems users have with it.

In Pages '09 v4.3, use the Format menu : Table : Convert Text to Table, or Format menu : Table : Convert Table to Text.

In any release of Pages v5 including v5.6.1 on El Capitan, you use this guide that I wrote.

If you have a single column of items in a list, select these, and paste into the first table cell. They will populate downwards, dynamically adding rows to accommodate the list items.

Thank you everyone, I finally copied an pasted into a -previously created- table matching the dimensions and it definitely worked out!
