Q: I'm having a problem connecting to the iTunes store

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and am running OS X Capitan Version 10.11.4.  I am unable to check my account in the iTunes store: when I try to login, I get a message saying that there was a problem connecting to the iTunes server.  Is there a problem at the Apple end?  If not, what is my best approach to access the iTunes store?
