Q: Some merchants slow to activate Apple Pay?

Hi,

I've noticed in the SF bay area many merchants have the Apple Pay reader but do not have it activated.

Why would a merchant have the reader but not have it ready for use?

    Hi Carolyn

You would need to ask the merchants in question.

    Hi Jonathan ..

Actually I should re word this ...

I have asked why they're reader is not activated. The standard response is that they do not have the software. One store in particular has had the reader for a year and a half!

But just now I found a link for Apple Pay feedback >  http://www.apple.com/support/apple-pay/feedback/

Maybe that will initiate some action.

It is certainly possible for a merchant to have an NFC capable terminal, but for that terminal to not yet be ready for accepting payments via Apple Pay.

In order for any given merchant to be able to accept Apple Pay, their payment terminals must meet various acceptance standards (hardware, software, contactless specification and EMV specification). Such requirements typically also differ, to a certain extent, by card type (Amex, Discover, MasterCard, Visa).

Terminal upgrades (whether relating to hardware and/or software) are a matter between merchants and their merchant account provider (or independent sales organisation) and/or between merchants and their payment processor (for some merchants, their merchant account provider and payment processor may be one and the same).

Apple is not involved in this process. If you would like to encourage any given merchant to accept Apple Pay, your feedback may most effectively be directed to that merchant's head office and/or to their customer services team.

Johnathan, you are a font of information. I really appreciate all your help. I was lucky and was able to be one of the first to use Apple Pay at AT&T park last year at the SF Giants world series games but I really hadn't had time to delve into all the intricacies. Now I can do that.
