Jul 26, 2014 10:00 AM in response to Matisby dj Z00M,I just bought a new adaptor and have it connected to my TV. Video works fine. I've read through all the threads and I am not getting a single option for HDMI audio. I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012, I have checked under audio MIDI and the options are not even located there for HDMI audio. The adaptor supports audio too. The HDMI cable I have supports audio. Under preferences, there's no option for HDMI "output", I'm only given internal speakers output and my Apple TV output. I've tried restarting my system, shut it it down and restarted, logged-off and restarted. NOTHING. !!!!!!! Oh, and I'm running Mavricks with the most recent update.

Feb 17, 2015 6:35 PM in response to Matisby Fletchermetcher,i just bought a Belkin Mini port and was having the same issue. But found the problem. Just need to go to the Audio settings of the media player and select the output you want to use, select HDMI and it works. We are currently watching and listening directly on my our tv. I had to reser my TV at some point as it was also causing an issue but that was just a matter of unplug all cables including the power cable and reconnect everything. I tested this with a Sony and Samsung TVs. Hope it works for you too!

Mar 8, 2015 1:17 PM in response to Sergeant Gr33nby fepperson22,Not sure if this is the right place to leave this but I had a similar problem on my Mid-2010 MBP. Sound suddenly stopped playing on my TV. I took some advice from a previous comment and went into Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup and basically did nothing. What I mean is I changed a couple things, changed them right back, and that worked. Sound began playing through my TV again. I can't explain it, but it worked.

May 9, 2015 6:53 AM in response to SlugBlanketby stiglio,I bought a non-Apple cable and never would have figured this out - thanks for posting it!
It's been 4 years since your post - can't imaging why Apple doesn't fix this (make it default these values).

May 14, 2015 3:34 AM in response to Matisby cashmonies,If anyone is still looking at this thread, I could use some help. Per the theme: trying to hook MacBook Air to TV. Get picture, sound still plays on the MacBook, not the TV.
I have a mid-2013 MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite. TV is a Sony Bravia R55. From my MBAir, I am connection a Belkin MinDisplayPort to HDMI adapter, connected to an Amazon HDMI cable, to the TV.
Tried the Systems Preferences>>Sounds>>Output>>select a device option. However, I can only see "internal speakers", no matter what I do.
Tried the Finder>>Applications>>Utilities>>Audio MIDI Setup, but again, the only option is "built-in output". Nothing about selecting HDMI or the TV or anything. Someone on here had recommended "Create Mutli-Output Device" from the Audio MIDI Setup window, but that didn't work, either.
Even tried fooling around with the default 44100.0 Hz options, but still nothing.
Any solutions???

Jan 30, 2016 3:25 PM in response to cashmoniesby fotodocent,VERY late for the train here but I think I see one solution.
Connect your TV via the HDMI adapter and cable.
Open Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
Click on OUTPUT. You should see HDMI as one option. Click to highlight this.
Find the GEAR at the bottom of the left-hand sidebar. Click this and select Use This Device For Sound Output.
You should be home free.

May 28, 2016 7:59 AM in response to ikqueby Maredsous8,TV is NOT displayed as an option for sound output.
Unplug the TV (not just turn off), and unplug the HDMI cable from the TV.
Not sure if unplugging both is necessary, but it works for me when this happens.
Also, I don't think you have shut down the mac. Last time this happened it wasn't necessary.
