Q: iPhone 6s Distorted Sound

Hello All,

I have just received my iPhone 6S (iOS 9.0.1) and i'm really enjoying the new features, however I've noticed that when I have my Ringer Volume turned up full there is a slight crackling/distortion when playing sounds from the bottom external speaker.

The best way I've found to reproduce this issue is by going into settings, turning the ringer volume to full (having the ringer volume anything below full will stop the distortion) and then playing the ringtone "Opening", the speaker will make a minor distorting sound at the high points of the ringtone.

I've spoken to a friend who has a 6S Plus and they have reproduced the same issue, I would like to ask if anyone in the community could try the ringtone above and let me know if they get the same problems with the speaker?

Thanks in advance

Craig

I actually did the same thing.  I replaced my phone once because of the distortion with no help.  But I was restoring from a back up every time i setup the phone (with all the stuff on my for years and years it is the ONLY way i want to setup an iphone!)  Every time i'd restore the phone i would get the distortion.  But if I set the phone up new there was not distortion.

So a few weeks ago i Reset ONLY the settings on the phone.  (the phone was already restored with all my stuff on it)  the distortion is now gone!  Who knows if that will work for everyone or not.  But for me the speakers are clear now.   And actually the phone seems less glitchy.

Question for both MuzMac and Robber80 ..... Did you try Agnes Obel, Chord Left (available on iTunes)?

I think that you will still find that the iPhone speaker distorts and crackles, I'm afraid

No I havent .. Its not a sound I will use, and I assume I have to pay for it to test it ?, so I'm not bothered. All the sounds I use work absolutely  fine, and the terrible  distortion I previously experienced has gone from the same device that previously was affected by it, using the method I outlined above.

However Ive tried listening to a few music tracks, and depending on the dynamic content, its true at full volume some will begin to break up just a little, this however seems normal to me, as the speaker in any phone is tiny, and infact, I am quite surprised it can sound as loud as it does !. The same  track played through connected headphones sounds fine, presumably as they are capable of outputting a higher dynamic range than a tiny speaker in a phone.

I think Apple definately have a problem here as it took me a long time to get my 6s plus back to where I was with my 6 because I had to set it up manually, and I lost all my call and text logs as a result, had to reset up all my emails and VPN's etc fortunately all those details were in my ipad, so it was not a total loss and rebuild from memory !!

The only issue I noticed recently was that it stopped playing 'any' sound when a text was incoming or when I replied. A restart solved that and a check that alerts were set for incoming texts .. i'll keep an eye on that one

Muzmac,  I was having the same issue you were. Normal sounds like sending a text were loud distorted and cracking.  But I too did not want to loose my texts, and call logs.

so I delt with it...  But the I decided to just reset the settings on the phone. And surprisingly it worked!  So I still have all my texts and call log.  Maybe it would be worth you trying to restore an old back up and trying that.  I know you fixed the problem,  but I also know you wanted your old histories on there.

GUE DIVER,  I tried the chord left,  it does crack a little. But I tried it on my, iPhone 6, ipad Air, and iPad mini 4.  They all were quieter in volume compared to my 6s.  BUT you could still hear some minor cracking noise With all of the devIces. I think Muzmac is correct The Newer phones put out a little more volume than the speakers can handle.

Robber80 .. theres no way I'm doing anything more !!!  It was a real pain to get this far ...  for what is a fantastic device that I depend on so much .. even getting 4000 plus songs back in to it was a pain .. I'm now sticking with the addage of 'if it aint broke dont fix it' !!

MuzMac and Robber80 .... Thanks for confirming and as I expected, ALL phones are clearly fitted with an inferior sub optimal poor speaker. Incidentally, Chord Left can be tried free of charge in iTunes or off you tube or similar.

I wouldn't quite put it that way GUE Diver ,,, its a phone....  and not meant to sound like a Hifi system... the fact they get the volume they do from such a tiny speaker is amazing .. I'm no apple employee BTW

My speakers are fine playing music, watching videos and making calls via headphones or bluetooth in car.  But I get lots of crackling during calls when holding device and when I play back videos I have made I have no sound other than crackling. Any ideas?
