Q: Why is my Iphone 6s saying that I used 44.59gb of documents and data when I haven't? Recently updated to iOS 9.2.1 and having problems.

I purchased the newest Iphone 6s with 64gb of storage in December. A couple of days ago I updated to iOS 9.2.1 and I got a notification the next day saying that my storage was almost full. I was shocked because I haven't even used half of the 64gb and before I updated to the most recent update everything was working fine. Also, on a side note game center is not working and when I try to open the app it is just a blank screen and when I go into to settings to click on the game center icon it doesnt even open.

Getting back to the storage problem, I didnt even use a lot of my storage up. Look at the photo for reference. This photo was taken after I updated.GetAttachment.aspx.jpe

So I am very confused right now with my phone and I only got it a month ago and this is already happening. It doesnt make sense for me to have only 4.84 gb free. I used 6.76 gb on apps, and I have 20 apps and I can understand that but where is this other 44gb coming from?

Why does it say that I used 44.59gb of documents and data when I haven't? Could this be a glitch due to updating to iOS 9.2.1?

Theres nothing wrong  the update. Your apps might be crashing and are causing ypur storage to be corrupt. Reset to new iPhone and that will fix the problem

    Brad,

You're right, I realize now it was coincidence, and has happened to people using many iOs versions. I reset and restored from iCloud and it seems to be well. I lost over 80gigs of space in a few hours. There's a memory leak somewhere!

Fellas, I'm also able to fix this issue by restoring to latest back-up! You don't even need to set-up as new iPhone! simply restoring will bring those GBs back to your iPhone.

In case you don't have latest back-up, no worries just go ahead & back up with the "junk" data, iTunes is enough smart to bring just the data needed.

I had the same problem as soon as I updated.

That night I backed up my phone. Restored to an older version. Issue was still there. Restored to the most recent back up and issue was still there.

No matter which back up I choose, it doesn't help get rid of the documents and data issue and it just gets worse everyday.

Additional annoyance, when I restored my phone I lost all my saved activity from my apple watch.

Over half of my usage is "documents and data" before the update I never noticed how much I was using, but I always had about half of my memory available (I have a 64g). I have gone through and cleared caches, I've deleted pictures, apps, voicemails, imessages, but documents and data is growing and growing.

When you check the allocation for Documents & Data in Settings/General/Storage & iCloud Usage what do you see?

On my itunes, when my phone is connected it says I have 29 gigs of documents and data at this time. Haven't done count per app, on my phone but its no where near 29. Wasn't ever an issue until I updated ios.

I added up the documents and data that is listed on my phone's app list and its just over 5 gigs.

I would take your phone in to your nearest Apple Store if you cannot figure out the problem. They helped me with fixing this problem.

Restoring my 64g iPhone to last back up helped me! It's unfortunate to hear not working for you? I guess you should take your iPhone to nearest Apple store or else wait for next iOS release! I hope Apple should take due note of this as many users reported this issue; esp iPhone 6! Hope they will release some patch to fix this?

I have been scratching my head with this one for ages, I had warnings that my phone was low on memory on both my iPhone 6 and iPad air 2

    Both are 128gb

Confused I was so reading the posts on here prompted me to try some things out.

I back up daily to iCloud - but you never see the amount of space "lost" to documents and data until you connect via iTunes - I found that roughly the same amounts of storage were being chewed up by the offender. A massive 80gb !!

How I've solved it - whilst connected via cable to iTunes check you have a recent backup. I then used my iphone and the find my iphone app to ERASE  my iPad, admittedly somewhat worried but so fed up ready to chance it.

I then restored the iPad from my most recent iCloud back up - this option is offered along with others once you have rebooted the phone after the erasure.

The iPad then took about 9 hours to sort itself out reinstalling all the apps - but I am pleased to say that I have released approx 70gb of storage.

I was operating borderl "full" and having to delete photos to keep space free.

Now I smile when I'm snapping away, with the knowledge I have tons to go at.

You can go to Settings/General/Storage & iCloud Usage - Manage Storage and see how your storage is allocated by app. Tap on an app to see how much is in Documents & Data.

I Thought as much, but when you actually add all that lot up, its nothing like the true amount that's tied up - this is what prompted me investigate further.

Hey ! Hope you are doing great
    Here is you solution

Load up iTunes on your computer.

Connect your iPhone and see how much space it shows used for the "Others" section at the bottom of the screen.

By the sounds of it, it sounds like your iPhone is using up a lot of space for this Others category.

Some of these links might help you solve the large amount of space used for the Others category (if that is the case with your iPhone).

I have been having the same issues. Did the forced restart like you suggested and my storage is slowly coming back up. Hopefully this will fix the issue. After the restart the first time I looked it showed 10 megs, the next time I looked it showed 43 megs, so shows 96 megs.

    Thanks for the tip
