Q: Apple FORCES ID CHANGE, can't access apps or iTunes on iPhone

A few days ago APPLE told me I had to access my ID (THAT I'd HAD FOR 20yesrs) was "not acceptable or valid".

They forced me to use an e-mail address. And my NORMAL email address that had my ID as part of it's name wasn't acceptable either.

SO i gave an emali address to go into my ID ONLY TO FIND THAT"S NOW MY "NEW ID" - except IT DOESN'T WORK ON my iPhone 5s (still uses the OLD ID) so I can update and add apps!

HOW TO FIX THIS?

FWIW I tried signing in using my iCloud ID but no Joy there either.

HOW DO I ENTER the New (Changed) Apple ID?

My phone is running IOS 8.3 - I'm HAPPY with that and don't wish to update.

iPhone 5s, iOS 8, 64GB

    Hi ...

At this point you would be better off contacting Apple - iCloud Support directly >   https://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/

So you've had an Apple ID for 5 years longer than iTunes has been around?

How did Apple tell you this Apple ID wasn't valid?

Do you have both an Apple ID and an iCloud ID? An iCloud ID has the same functionality as an Apple ID.

Yes - I've had an Apple ID since 1996.

They sent an email someone had tried to change the password

Yes I have an Apple ID and an iCloud ID they were never the same (don't think they allowed me to use the same ID).

NOT IN THIS CASE - though signed into my Apple ID on the iPhone it still asked for the password to the ORIGINAL (old) Apple ID but would not accept it.

I tried signing out of the OLD Apple ID - COULD ONLY SIGN INTO the iCloud ID.

The wetware outsmarted the software and I downloaded the updates and new app to my laptop then had the laptop update the iPhone BUT this is a WORKAROUND not a SOLUTION. If I need to update or wish to add an app and I'm not near my laptop I'm SOL.

AppleIDs predate iTunes by a long time.  An AppleID has been a standard form of online user identification for Apple services since the 1990s.  Originally, they were not even required to be an email address.  In fact, in the early days of ADC, your login ID (which later became an AppleID) was required to be a simple alphanumeric string.

Any idea's on what's going on? I went to sign out of iTunes on my iPhone but couldn't find a spot to do that. I thought that maybe that's where the problem was. I was referred to Settings ->General but found nothing there either.

FWIW I contacted APPLE ID SUPPORT at the time of the forced change to my password have received exactly NOTHING in reply.

You sign out of the iTunes or App stores from the apps themselves - scroll all the way down to the bottom of the first opening screen, click on the AppleID shown and you should get a pop up that has "sign out" as an option.

Was your old AppleID not an actual email address?  Over the years they've steadily moved towards requiring an AppleID be an email address (all new ones made now must be so).  Most people who had an old AppleID that was not an email address have run into a requirement to change it by now, but perhaps yours slipped under the radar somehow for longer than most?

The following shows how to edit or change AppleIDs without changing the underlying account - Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

You can probably still salvage your old one if you go in to the manage your AppleID site and change the name and primary email there.  Or, you should be able to call Apple and ask for accounts help explaining you need to change an older AppleID from an alphanumeric string to it's listed email address.  You can't do that over the Internet though, you'll have to call them to get help doing that.

Signing out no longer a problem but can only sign into my iCloud ID. The "new" ID  is not being allowed/recognized as valid.

Was your old AppleID not an actual email address?

         Correct it was one word.

At iTunes my old account info (balance downloads pending downloads etc) are still there in the under ID.

WHY in their infinite wisdom did not APPLE FORCE ME TO FOLLOW the procedure needed to SEAMLESSLY TRANSFER my ID?

    Is calling Apple Free?
