Q: How do I create a new system administrator?

I am trying to add a WiFi card to my computer but do not know my administrator name or password. Can this be changed?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Potentially yes, but you would need to know the Administrator name. You will also need to access the Mac in OS X Single User Mode to do so.

Then, you would need to enter the following commands, in sequence:

(Caveat: If you don't know what any of these commands do, you could potentially make your Mac unaccessible if entered incorrectly.)

    • fsck -fy
    • mount -uw /
    • launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist
    • passwd username
    • reboot
