Q: MacBook won't connect to HP Pavilion 23xw, screen just flashes whether hooked to thunderbolt or directly to HDMI

Tried connecting my newer MacBook to my home monitor, HP Pavilion 23xw and the screen just flashes. This worked flawlessly with my older macbook pro. I've tried using the Thunderbolt VGA, Thunderbolt HDMI and the integrated HDMI port, all with the same flashing results.

Does the monitor work with other devices?

What resolution is your MacBook currently set at?

Going by the Specs, the Pavilion maxes out at 1900 x 1080p.

If your MacBook is anywhere under 3 years old, its very likely using a resolution the monitor cannot handle.

You can go to System Preferences->Display

and lower the resolution being output to the monitor.

Using a Retina display - Apple Support

You can see more resolution options for your external display by holding down the Option key while clicking the Scaled button.
