Q: 1G iPod touch that wont download iOS 3.1

I have a 1G iPod touch that is currently at 1.1.5(4B1) and when I followed the apple link:

https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLegacyLandingPage

to purchase and upgrade to iOS 3.1 it says the software is downloading and will take 30min but it doesn't ever download.  In my iTunes purchase history it says the software has been purchased and I have been charge $5.99, but my iPod touch does not update.

Please help!

Many thanks

iPod touch, iOS 1.x

I have the exact same issue. Just purchased the upgrade, it takes you to a static page in iTunes which displays text saying it is downloading the update, but there is no indicator anywhere to suggest this is actually happening. I waited a while and still nothing. It appears to not be downloading at all, though it clearly is meant to. Screenshot below of the screen in question. You will get to it after following this iTunes store link and purchasing the upgrade.

By the way this was never solved. I spent a few hours on the phone with Apple support and they were unable to resolve the issue. I went to my local Apple Store to sit with a genius and they were also unable to solve the problem.

It is very possible that older iOS versions are no longer kept on Apple's servers.

Usually, once Apple introduces a new iOS, they discontinue the previous version.

You device is very old and its iOS was never upgraded/updated.

It is very possible that iTunes link is a dead, now defunct, link.

    Sorry.

Your statement "Usually, once Apple introduces a new iOS, they discontinue the previous version" is only true for none-end-of the-line OSX versions. 3.1.3 is the end-of the-line for the 1G iPod and is in a strange situation since it was the only paid update.

One still can restore a 2G iPod to 4.2.1, a 3G to 5.1.1 and a 4G to 6.1.6 since those are end-of-the-line for those models.

After an non-end-if-line update Apple stops signing previous non-end-of-line version and that is why one can't restore to an earlier iOS version. Previous iOS versions are readily available but since Apple is not signing them yo only get an error if you try to restore to an earlier version.
