Q: Replace battery or buy new laptop?

Currently using a mid-2010 13' white macbook.  Battery is beginning to bulge on the bottom.  Laptop seems to be super slow ever since updating to El Capitan.  Have an appointment this weekend with genius bar where I will most likely have to have them replace the battery.  Will replacing the battery fix the speed issues or is it time for me to get a new laptop at this point?

No, the battery won't have anything to do with speeding it up. Also, I don't believe that Apple has replacement batteries (for 6 year old models). You'll probably need a 3rd party solution.

Not knowing any of the specifics about your Macbook, i.e., RAM amount, hard drive type and speed, doesn't help for recommendation purposes.

However, replacing your hard drive with a SSD and maximizing your RAM to 8 or the maximum 16 Gigs would give it a shot in the arm.

If there is distortion due to an expanding battery, I would take it out immediately.  If the expansion continues, it can severely damage your Mac.

    Ciao.
