Q: No, my problem is NOT solved: still can't sync some photos to iPad Pro from iMac

I posted this question yesterday, and after one response (which was not helpful, though I do appreciate Rudegar's having tried to help me), mysteriously my question was marked as "Solved" in the list of questions, so it's unlikely that more people will look at that thread. I can't figure out how to remove that "Solved" label, so I'm posting my question again.

I'm trying to sync selected photos from my iMac (running Mavericks 10.9.5) to my new iPad Pro (12.9 inch model, updated to iOS 9.3.1). I connect the iPad to the iMac, fire up iTunes (version 12.3.3.17, it says), select the iPad in iTumes and then the "Photos" tab over on the left. On the right I choose "Selected Folders," and in the "Folders" window below that I check the boxes for the folders that I want and click on "Apply" if it's there or "Sync" if that's the only option showing.

Every time, a few photos refuse to move over to the iPad. It's always the same ones, but I can't find any common characteristic (e. g., wrong extension or huge file size) that would explain why those photos won't go while everything else will. Typically in a folder with 20 photos, between 15 and 20 will move over to the iPad. But why won't the rest? This is really bugging me. I've tried unplugging and replugging the iPad, turning it off and on, quitting and restarting iTunes, and even putting the ones that won't sync into a special folder all of their own. No luck.

Can anybody help me out?

iPad Pro, iOS 9.3.1

Agree. This issue is I am fairly certain an issue with the latest version of iTunes. My configuration is as follows:

    - OSX El Capitan.

    - iPad Pro 9.7" - 256 GB

    - iTunes 12.3.3.17

The behaviour I'm seeing, is exactly as described above, with syncing of photos resulting in whole folders being excluded when a full sync is requested. However my photos are not coming from a Photos Application library, simply from Finder based folders. Other threads on this topic describe "reverting" to version 12.3.2 solving the issue, but that isn't possible for me, because 12.3.3 is required for iPad Pro.

Also, I do note that this version if iTunes behaves the same way when syncing photos to my iPhone 6 Plus now. That is it has actually regressed functionality, for older devices.

This is really frustrating, given one of the reasons I went for a high-capacity iPad was because of its capacity for storing a large number of photos! Not a great start for my new device. Given Apple had just inadvertently disabled the cellular features of my old iPad 2 (that I have just upgraded from) with the most recent 9.3 iOS upgrade, it hasn't been a good few weeks from my perspective for Apple software releases!

    Trevorfromoakpark,

I'm in the exact same position as you.  Purchased the 256GB version to save more photos, but this bug is preventing that fro happenin...very frustratin!

I have exactly the same issue!

Spent around two hours with higher level phone support on the weekend and this problem was not resolved after various solutions tried. Syncs perfectly with old iPad2 by the way. All photos older than mid 2012 are not syncing across, everything after this date is fine.

Issue has now been escalated to engineers apparently and they are working on a solution .... I'll let you know the outcome!!

    HI fimichor,

I also had the issue escalated to engineers 9 days ago.  Despite my follow-ups, there has been no information concerning a fix.

I too have spoken to Apple Support and also logged a bug report online via their feedback system.  I suspect we are going to have to wait for an iTunes update to sort this out, sadly.  It is very frustrating.

Thanks to all of you for your efforts to sort out this problem; I don't have the time or patience to spend hours on the phone with Apple, trying to find a solution, but you've saved me from that. I'll just have to be patient and wait for a newer version of iTunes to fix this bug.

I should have looked here first rather than contacting apple technical support. My technician tried everything he could and today I got my replacement iPad Pro as they assumed it was the (brand new 9.7 inch device) that was faulty. Thank you for the fix when I have some time I will try that. But, hopefully Apple will release an iTunes update that fixes the problem.

I've been having exactly the same problem as detailed here: brand new iPad Pro 9.7, El Capitan etc....

I found that if you choose to sync to a folder of images instead (in iTunes switch from `Copy folders from: Photos.' to 'Copy folders from: Choose folder; Pictures' (and then select a folder comprised of the same images  you were trying to sync) it works fine. This implies it's not corrupt images etc, but rather some conflict between Photos, iTunes and the iPad (I say this as my phone works fine as others have noted).

I assume [!] that a software update will fix this at some point, but frustrating until that point...

Yes, still waiting.  My contact at Apple that I had shared the problem with and who raised it to Engineers has not responded to any follow-ups and has gone MIA.  I had such high hopes for the AHA T2 Blue Team....

Still have the problem here too. It's really frustrating as it means I'm having to use my old iPad Air for photos (which does all sync my albums from iPhoto just fine) instead of my brand new iPad Pro. So as I don't want to carry two iPads around with me, my new iPad Pro isn't being used. Nor good, feel like taking it back to Apple really.  It sounds from Matthew's post that the Apple Engineers have no idea what's wrong, which doesn't bode well.

I'm glad I finally found this post. I've been having this problem and it has driven me crazy. There's some comfort to know the problem is Apple's, not something wrong with my computer or my photo library. I have an iPad Pro (12.9-inch) running iOS 9.3 with Mac Mini running Mavericks.

Initially my iphone-6plus running iOS 9.3 briefly had the problem too but it suddenly went away. Never a problem with my iPad Mini.

I also noticed it always seems to be the same photos - some transfer fine but 1/3 of them don't and its always the same ones. After many attempts at the usual steps of rebooting the mac, rebooting the iPad, deleting iPod cache in the iPhoto library, repairing and rebuilding the iPhoto library (all with no success in many combinations), I tried several experiments:

    - I tried selecting all photos, or all events, or some events, or all albums, or some albums and the problem persisted,

    - I tried moving the same pictures from within the iPhoto library to a folder on the desktop and setting iTunes to sync the photos from that desktop folder, and the same photos again would not transfer.

    - I transferred the iPhoto album to another mac (2011 MBA with mavericks) and the problem persisted.

    - I upgraded the Mac Mini to Yosemite and the problem persisted.

    - I migrated the iPhoto album to Photos (now that I am running Yosemite), and the problem persisted.

It is very maddening to have this huge screen iPad with plenty of storage and not to be able to have it hold whatever photos I choose. Using iCloud is NOT an acceptable workaround (if it would even work) -- 5GB is not nearly enough storage and I certainly do not trust Apple to keep my photos safe if they cannot solve the problem of a basic sync of photos from my local mac to an iPad Pro with a direct cable connection. This is RIDICULOUS Apple! I have logged my problem on the Apple customer support webpage and urge everyone to do the same if they haven't.

I do not have any plans to buy a 9.7-inch iPad Pro, but I am curious if this problem affects that tablet as well.

    C'mon Apple. You're worth $500B. Fix this.

Sorry, experiment 4 and 5 should say I upgraded to El Capitan (not Yosemite) on the Mac Mini.

Also, I see from trevorfromoakpark's post that this problem is affecting the 9.7-inch iPad Pro as well.

    Hi All,

Just a quick update on my situation. I did contact Apple Support - here in Australia - and I have been engaged with a very helpful second tier support person in Asia Pac who is escalating this issue with quite some energy. He is convinced there is an issue, but has even reported back to receiving scepticism "up the line" that there is a problem. However videos I have been able to provided of my synchronisation terminating early has provided a more concrete example of just what is going wrong. I'll report back on any progress I make in that direction.

The key observations of my situation are:

    1. I do have a large number of photos I want to synchronise across to my iPad Pro 9.7" - well over 14,000 - arranged in year named folders - not in Photos app libraries - just conventional folders

    2. At the beginning of the Synch, I see these folders get created on the iPad - but subsequently disappear when the synch subsequently terminates early.

    3. In my case, it always fails around the same number of photos - for me that's just over the 3,000 mark.

    4. One suggestion Apple support had, was for me to try synching in "Safe Mode" - no change having tried that unfortunately.

    5. The interesting thing is that the problem also afflicts my much older iPhone 6 Plus now - which previously did hold ALL these photos. When I sync it now, it only has the limited selection of photos on it that the iPad Pro has - whereas prior to iTunes 12.3.3 / iOS 9.3 it had the whole 14,000 photos on it - it is a 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus. So that is a pretty strong indication that the problem is very much software related.

So I am fairly convinced that something in either iTunes 12.3.3 or iOS 9.3 / 9.3.1 or how they work together has broken the synchronisation technology somehow. And as everyone has pointed out, given we've all shelled out for the high-capacity iPads, it would be nice to be able to exploit them and their gorgeous screens!

    Cheers,

    Trevor

Has anyone heard any updates from Apple Support?  My contact has been silent and I have not found any news of an iTunes update.

Someone posted this video, which shows what happens when I attempt to sync photos as well.
