I know you say your backups are gone, but follow this Apple procedure to restore your system. If you let Time Machine run every hour as it is designed to do there will be multiple backups that you can choose from.

OS X El Capitan: Recover your entire system

After Apple helped you install OS X, did it take a very long time to make a backup? It is possible that the backup disk is not large enough and Time Machine could not make enough room for a new backup by erasing old backups. This is by design. Many folks here recommend a backup disk to be two or three times the size of the data being backed up; and that a user have multiple backups on separate disks by different backup programs, i. e. Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner, etc.

Finally, here are the Apple supported Time Machine backup disks. Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support

    Have a nice day.
