Q: Epson Perfection V600 Scanner not working with El Capitan

I'm on a MacBook Pro, upgraded from Lion to El Capitan. My Epson Perfection V600 scanner doesn't work now. When I try to scan it attempts to open it on the Mac, but then before it can finish, it closes the Epson down.

I went to event manager and it created a huge report that I have sent to Apple.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

I recently upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.4 version.

From Epson I downloaded the "latest" Epson V600 upgrade for El Capitan, and it shows up as:

Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.9.4 dated 10.13.14. ??

    "Compatible Systems: Macintosh OS X (v10.11.x), Mac OS X (v10.10.x), Mac OS X (v10.9.x), Mac OS X (v10.8.x), Mac OS X (v10.7.x), Mac OS X (v10.6.x), Mac OS X (v10.5)"

Epson and Apple still need to figure it out.

I have El Capitan 10.11.4 I have the Epson Perfection scanner button problem.

Note, the Epson Perfection V600 is sold on the Apple Store ... so Apple/Epson need to fix this.

    PROBLEM DETAILS:

All the Epson scanner drivers and software are up to date on my MacBook Pro mid 2012, but the scanner buttons don't work. When the TWAIN switch alert window pops up, and I press to switch to TWAIN, the Epson Scan button on the scanner works one time. After that, the button stops working. None of the buttons work. I press and nothing occurs at all. The scanner on/off button does work, however.

I restart the computer and scanner and still no go with the buttons. The scanner itself seems to be working fine via ImageCapture or Epson Scan app. It's just the buttons on the scanner.

Again, when I reset TWAIN devices via ImageCapture and then switch back to TWAIN devices as described above in my message here, the scanner button works just one time and then stop working.

I spent about 2 hours with Epson tech support on 4/20/16, but they could not fix the problem. It was quite frustrating. I was using a Perfection V39 at that time. The button works that one time and then nothing. Epson tech support insisted that the scanner is compatible over an over. It clearly is not compatible (at least not yet). I returned the Perfection V39 to Amazon and then purchased the V600 because the V600 is on the Apple Store. I figured it must be compatible. No dice, the V600 has the same scanner-buttons problem as the V39.

Epson Scan software is extremely archaic and needs a major update. However, it can be made to work. That having been said, Apple's Image Capture app works very well, and you should check that out first.

    Basically, you need to install:

    1. Latest software for your model.

    2. Latest software for some other model, if the latest software for your model doesn't work.

I have a Perfection 4990. I installed the Epson Scan software for that model. Then I installed the Epson Scan software for the V500 (the model that replaced it).

Then I installed an ICA driver v. 5.8.6.

I now have a working Epson Scan app (version 5.1.1f5).

Epson Scan works fine, it's the four scan-buttons on the V600 and V39 Perfection scanners that don't work. I think this is a El Capitan 10.11.4 problem. I'd like for my wife to just be able to press a scan button have have the scanner scan. This does not appear to be possible.

I suspect it is an update to Event Manager which is needed, as that program will run in the background and detect button presses from the scanner.  Epson Support told me last December that a new version for El Capitan "was coming".  But here it is, May 2016, and still no sign of it.

Happy to hear of any alternatives.  Maybe the answer is to use third party scanning software, if any can be recommended.

    Thanks
