Q: Convert greek letters to western in TextEdit

My computer crashed while I had an unsaved TextEdit file open, and when I opened the autosaved version the letters were converted to greek letters. I cant find a way to revert the letters back to western (english) letters. The text is not translated into greek, just the letters are swapped:

Below is an example of the text and a screenshot of the text:

Ηουρσ ΠΓ ρενδερινγ προϕεχτ Μαρχη 2016

Μονδαψ 21

  Μεετινγ − 30 μινυτεσ

Τυεσδαψ 22

The text should say:

Hours PG Project March 2016

Monday 21

     Meeting - 30 minutes

Tuesday 22

I have never encountered this problem before.

Importing the text into other programs such as MS Word or InDesign does not solve the problem.

Im running latest version of OSX, 10.11.4 on a MacPro4,1

Have you tried selecting the text and just changing the font?

Swapping like that indicates your doc is for some reason using a junk greek font which replaces Latin letters with Greek.  These are sometimes still found in bible study courses.  Or  maybe an old legacy Symbols font.

Thanks Tom, yes, changing the font was the very first thing I tried, unfortunately it only changes the font, not the letters.

I also tried importing into other programs with more formatting options, and I couldnt find a solution that way either. (MS Word and InDesign).

My suggestion is that if the text is short just retype it. If it is more than a few sentences, grit your teeth and use

TextEdit > Edit > Find > Find and Replace ...

to replace first 'alpha' (copy it from the text) to what ever the correct substitute is 'a', then 'beta' with 'b', etc. Tedious and annoying but it will only take ten minutes and the job will be done.
