Q: why do i only have digital out

Since plugging in a mini jack "out" my volume icon is greyed out and I don't have the option to increase volume. In "system preferences > sound" it only shows "digital out" and no sound comes out on the speakers although I hear sound on startup. Also, when I plug in headphones, there is sound for about 10 seconds or less, then the right ear disappears and then the whole lot gets progressively more crackly until only the crackle remains. There is a red light visible in the jack port. I have tried everything I could find on the web without success. I do believe it must be fixable because the jack works for a time and there is sound when I startup. Please help.

    Greetings dunxnudder,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that the sound on your Mac is not working as expected and see a red light inside of the port. We know that situations like this can be frustrating, but we’re here to help.

To begin troubleshooting, read over and work through the suggested steps from the following article.

    Have a great day!

Probably you have tried these steps already.

    Try it once more please..

Go step by step and test.

    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers

        Highlight  Internal Speakers.

Make sure that Mute is not enabled.

    2. Plug in and  remove the headphone.

If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone

in and o ut of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.

Sound output may be stuck in digital mode.

    3. Reset PRAM.   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761

    4. Reset SMC.

Choose the method for “On Mac notebooks with non-removable battery”.

          https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

        Audio Devices window

        Side Bar

        Click the Built-in Output.

Make sure that  box is not checked under “Mute”.

Make sure that Format is set at 44100.0 Hz.

THanks for this, and although I have tried all of this before, I did it all again and no luck. Still only digital out available.
