Apr 27, 2016 10:08 AM in response to Neystakby vishal126,I know that this problem is not limited to videos. However, whenever it happens while watching a video, it mostly happens right after "un-pausing" a video. Is it just me, or others have noticed it too?

Apr 27, 2016 12:15 PM in response to vishal126by The_Ranger,This issue has happened to me a few times since I purchased my early 2015 rMBP 13" this summer. I'm not sure when it began. This happened earlier today to me, so I decided to do some researching of the issue. Upon hearing about Safari as a potential culprit, I closed it. I was playing an .mp4 file in quicktime and while scrubbing, the freezing occurred. It happened exactly like everyone else...screen freezes, keyboard and trackpad are no longer responsive, and the only way to get it back to normal is a powerdown and restart.
I honestly don't use my rMBP that much...I have a crappy lenovo for work. I can only imagine that if I used this computer for work that my life would be a living nightmare. This is totally unacceptable.
What version of OS X are people reverting to where this issue no longer remains? I am seeing reports that 10.11.3 is doing the same thing. Should I go back further until Apple sorts this thing out? Can anyone confirm that using TM to go back to 10.11.3 fixes the random freezing?

Apr 27, 2016 10:50 PM in response to The_Rangerby Király,For me the Safari freezing issue started long before 10.11.4. I reported it to Apple most recently in November when I was running 10.11.1. But it started quite a long time before that, possibly as far back as 10.9.x, but definitely by 10.10.x.

Apr 29, 2016 5:28 AM in response to Királyby Dod60,At the last couple of freezes I've noticed, using iStat Menus, that a process called 'distnoted' was hogging all the processor, up to 100%. The process itself (distnoted) was registering at over 380%. Soon after that other processes started 'not responding' including iStat Menus and Finder requiring a hard reboot. Turns out that 'distnoted' has been a problem with memory leakage in the past, which has supposed to have been rectified. I can't really find out exactly what 'distnoted' does so it's probably not safe to quit it but it seems to be involved with Notification Centre so I've found a Terminal command to quit Notification Centre and I'll let that run for a while and see what happens. That doesn't quit 'distnoted' though which is still active and may cause problems. Maybe others here could take this further as I'm no techy but it does seem to me that 'distnoted' is involved somewhere.

May 1, 2016 12:46 PM in response to Dod60by Yoonsik,@Dod60, I believe distnoted is definitely not the root of the problem.
I would just like to confirm that after updating to 10.11.4, both Safari and Safari Technology Preview have completely locked up my computer multiple times a day when watching or attempting to watch a video.

May 1, 2016 1:55 PM in response to Yoonsikby Dod60,@Yoonsik. You could of course be right as I'm no techy but I've noticed that every time I've had the freeze 'distnoted' has got all the processor power. Nothing else can get a look in so everything hangs. I've sent a report to Apple and let them think about it.

May 1, 2016 3:44 PM in response to Dod60by Edmundostudios,Has anyone fixed the crashes at all even by getting replacement hardware? I'm seriously at a loss of what to do.

May 1, 2016 3:50 PM in response to Edmundostudiosby Charles Bouldin,Well, I have 512 GB disk, so I partitioned into two 256 GB parts, then used Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate the original 10.11.4 install onto the new partition, then installed the beta 10.11.5 over the 10.11.4, keeping the original 10.11.4 install on the original partition. I am not allowed to comment on beta software, but i recommend it if you're having serious 10.11.4 issues, BUT backup, backup, backup, because this is beta software.
The pace of the release of 10.11.5 betas has picked up; there is now a beta 3, which I have not yet installed. Hopefully this means that the release of 10.11.5 is not too far away.
Read this quickly, in case the Apple board police decide to delete this. A pity they aren't all so zealous about fixing a serious problem that we've all been experiencing.

May 1, 2016 3:51 PM in response to Edmundostudiosby Charles Bouldin,And to answer your question more directly: Keep a log of the crashes and what you've done to try and fix it. Then go to an Apple store and demand a new computer. That may be what finally causes Apple to pay some attention to this.

May 1, 2016 4:02 PM in response to Charles Bouldinby Edmundostudios,Thanks, I don't want to do BETA software. My system is literally less than 6 months old and was working fine up till this last update. Even if I did get a replacement I think it would have the same problem seeing as we can't underpin what seems to be causing it.
This is seriously the most trouble I have ever had with a MAC. My warranty lasts for 3 years so if the next update doesn't fix it I guess I will go in and talk to someone even though it seems next to impossible to replicate when I want to.

May 1, 2016 4:14 PM in response to Edmundostudiosby Charles Bouldin,I totally get that, and you're absolutely right, there is NO reason you should have to deal with all this nonsense. Come to think of it, there is NO reason that ANY of us should have to put up with these issues. Windows, I expect this nonsense, but Apple? I've used Macs exclusively since 1984 and OS X since the days of the public beta, and this is the worst software screw up I've seen them make on the Mac. And, seriously, nearly all respondents here are reporting that this is a 10.11.4, so wouldn't step 0 just be to roll back parts of the codebase to 10.11.3?

May 1, 2016 5:02 PM in response to Neystakby Prouddad6,I, too, have had freeze issues with OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.4. I use a 21.5 inch; Mid 2010; 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 iMac and I have posted on this discussion forum on several occasions complaining about how maddening it is to have the computer lock-up.
About a week or so back, I was notified that my Adobe Flash Player needed updating; specifically, it downloaded AdobeFlashPlayer_21-a-install.dmg. To be honest, I didn't even realize I had an Adobe Flash Player Installed on my computer.
In any case, my iMac has not “frozen” since. This could simply be a fluke and I am not at all implying that updating Adobe Flash Player will solve everyone’s lock-up issues. I waited a while before posting to be sure I wasn’t imagining that my iMac was “cured.” For what it’s worth, I am pretty good with using computers, but I will admit I am in no way code savvy. I have no logical explanation as to why, but so far, my computer has been working fine. NOTE: I am simply writing about my experience ... I have no connection with Adobe.

May 1, 2016 5:03 PM in response to Charles Bouldinby Edmundostudios,To be honest I build my own Windows systems as well and never have any problems like this. iOS 9 also had a similar crash bug after launching last year which ruined my iPhone 5S until it was thankfully patched. I have been an apple user since the early 2000's but recently their software has been really rocky even Windows 10 has been much smoother with patches which is saying something.
Anyway glad I can talk about this with others having the same issue.

May 1, 2016 6:28 PM in response to Charles Bouldinby Király,And, seriously, nearly all respondents here are reporting that this is a 10.11.4
I had it during 10.10, and I reported it at bugreport.apple.com in November when I was running 10.11.1. Six weeks later Apple responded to that with "Engineering has determined that your bug report is a duplicate of another issue and will be closed." So it has been a known issue to Apple for a very, very long time.

May 2, 2016 10:01 AM in response to Grimsyby Jonnyakamu,Agree nothing works. Apple has know idea and it doesn't seem to be to urgent for them. I've done pretty much what everyone else has done. It even crashes using an external dvd player on iMac 27" (late 2015) Anything that plays video seems to be a guaranteed freeze and restart. I have know idea what's happening. I hope someone they figure it out soon.
