I/O errors are pretty serious. Generally, it means that there are bad blocks on the drive as it has begun to malfunction and may become inaccessible at any time. Most of the time this is an indication that the hard drive is dying.

It can also mean cabling problems or some other esoteric problem, but for an internal drive it is almost always physical malfunction.

As far as restoring you would need to have that as a Time Machine backup to do that. Do you?

If you have another Mac you may be able to use Target Disk Mode. Just copy your Home folder over. Then when you have the new drive after you install OSX, do not migrate. Just copy your files from within the top level folders (Not the folders named, Documents, Downloads, etc.) back to the corresponding folders.

On the boot partition, open Disk Utility and run Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions on the partition you are trying to restore to until you get no errors.
