Q: using icloud on an imac with 10.8.5
I am on an imac desktop running OS 10.8.5. How do I back up photos and itunes with icloud? It seems to need an app but
I cannot find such an app anywhere. When I open iCloud and sign in it says to select an app on the left to use for the upload process. When I select "back up" nothing happens. I have 200 gb of storage that I cannot access. It also prompts me to set an icloud email address. I already have one the program doesn;t seem to know that.

iCloud can be used to back up an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) but it will not back up a Mac.
For photos, if you were running OS X 10.10.3 or later with the new Photos app there is a feature where you can sync all of your photos to iCloud -- but it is designed for syncing among devices, not a backup. For example, if you accidentally delete a photo from a device it is automatically deleted from iCloud and all other devices.
The "Minimum system requirements by feature" section of System requirements for iCloud - Apple Support describes each iCloud feature and the requirement to use them.
