Q: No audio, volume keys use, etc.

Using a Retina 5k 27" iMac Late 2015, 3.3 GHz Core i5, with the Radeon R9 M395, running El Capitan. Partitioned and installed Boot Camp with a Windows 8.1 iso without any issues on the OS X end.

When in Windows 8.1 Boot Camp:

  • volume keys and number pad won't work on USB Apple keyboard
  • no audio coming out of internal speakers
  • can't adjust brightness with keyboard

Used free upgrade to Windows 10 from within Windows 8.1, hoping that would fix drivers and compatibility. It didn't. Issues still persist.

I've tried downloading the drivers from BCA separately, but that won't even download at all. The progress bar just sits there, about an inch long, and the estimated download time goes from around 10 minutes all the way up to 65 minutes and then back down, repeatedly. It just happens over and over again with no progress made. I've let it sit for an hour trying to do that and nothing helps. When I've tried downloading the zip files from Apple's support page and going that way, the Windows OS says that I can't use those drivers with this machine or something to that effect.

Followed Apple's directions for doing the partition and everything in BCA so I don't know what happened. After selecting the partition drive (I think it was number 5) during the install of Windows 8.1, it seemed like it went fine. But the right-click menu to restart in OS X option was nowhere to be found and when I boot in OS X, the boot camp hard drive icon on my desktop under the Macintosh HD is titled as "Untitled" instead of as Boot Camp? I don't know if that helps indicate what the issue might be. I've tried searching both within these boards and other places that Google provided and nothing helped. Almost all results were for Apple laptops or non-5k iMacs.

Please help. And let me know if there's any other information I can provide that would help.

Selected Installation and Storage and USB/Mouse/Keyboard/Trackpad categories since it kinda involves both.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

    1. Are you using a wired connection to download BC drivers using BC Assistant?

    2. Which is your current Windows OS version - 8.1 or 10?

    3. What are the listed Apple drivers and Keyboard and Human Interface Devices?

    4. Do you have any yellow triangles with an exclamation mark in Device Manager?

    1. Yes. I've even tried to do it when literally no one else was using the internet at home so I had the max bandwidth.

    2. Current is Windows 10, had upgraded from 8.1

    3. I will have to get back to you with that because I'm currently trying to re-do the entire process. Removed and recreate the partition and everything.

    4. I do remember that there were no triangles or other alerts in Device Manager.

You do not need to disconnect all other users, it is too draconian a step.

disconnect other users? You mean removing the whole boot camp drive?

I meant not disconnecting other users from your home network to get max bandwidth or asking them to stop using the network.

    No.

BCA download of drivers can be sensitive to underlying disk issues. If you boot into Internet Recovery and run the following command...

    diskutil repairDisk disk0

and then retry the BCA standalone software download, do you get better results using a wired connection?

I'm in Internet recovery right now and there's no option to run terminal commands? Lacking that, I ran disk utility and the Fusion Drive and Macintosh HD seem fine. An OSX Reserved hdd icon is showing up too for some reason. When I click on the OS X Reserved icon on my OS X desktop, it has a file system the same as the flash drive that was in the USB port while installing Windows in the first place. (It had unzipped contents from Apple's Windows driver page as well as the install files for upgrading to Windows 10)

Macintosh HD under Fusion Drive is listed as BSD device node disk3, if that helps with anything.

And I had just waited til everyone was asleep to try the one night, I didn't force people off the internet

*update edit* did the "diskutil repairDisk disk0" when logged into OS X and it says "updating windows boot.ini files as required.  the partition map appears to be OK. Finished partition map repair on disk0." I'll save what it says though so I can look things up if you need specific info.

The Terminal is hidden under Menu Bar -> Utilities -> Terminal. If you did not see any error messages during the repairDisk, retry installing Windows. Do you have a Time Machine backup setup?

Didn't see any error messages, and tried re-installing Windows. I've reinstalled twice before seeking help here because I thought a fresh install would help, but no luck. I did find some things on the Device Manager with the exclamation marks in the yellow triangles though. Under the Other Devices topic they are: Bluetooth USB Host Controller, FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in), and Network Controller. Those are the only three from the entire list though.

I do not have a Time Machine backup. I have a complete backup/clone of my old MacBook Pro hard drive, which I had used to migrate over apps and documents when I first set up my iMac. Could that be part of the issue? I don't know if maybe things got mixed up during the migration assistant that would screw up iMac framework to mimic the old MacBook Pro style. I didn't clone the entire drive over so I doubt that's the issue.

Update: figured out what was going wrong. Sound is working, brightness adjustment is now possible, and the usb super drive is installing a game as I type this. The number pad on my usb apple keyboard isn't working, but that I think just needs a wired keyboard driver update. Thanks for helping me though!

Please post the resolution for future readers.

Use the Clear key to toggle Numlock, which should make the Number Pad work.

Yep, clear key worked as numlock. And the embarrassing solution is:

make sure you're reading the instructions correctly for downloading the Windows drivers by themselves in BCA 6. They must be downloaded to the FAT-32 formatted jump drive.

I had formatted my jump drive but then tried downloading the drivers to my desktop to then move over to the drive myself. Do not do this. BCA wont know how to organize the files and it will take forever to try and set them up. Using them literally fixed all my problems. I'm embarrassed because of how simple it was.

Please create a Windows System Restore point and back up OSX .
