This is probably because a process is hogging up memory. Go to Activity Monitor on the CPU tab and check for the process with the highest CPU percentage and the name please when this happens. Also, check Console for logs around the exact time the freezing happened, see if any of them has any report attached or sounds as if its reporting a problem

The freezing occurs even when there are no programs open

Yes, thats why I am saying that you check for process and not apps. Even when you dont have any apps open your computer is still running many process (system process) that are necessary for your computer to work, please consider doing my suggestions.

When the machine becomes unresponsive, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

    Hello Amilixkan,

The distinction between apps and process is too subtle for most people to worry about. EtreCheck will do a very basic check of CPU usage, scan log files for serious problems, and print crash, hang, and resource hog reports. If there is an obvious problem, it will show up in the EtreCheck report. If there isn't an obvious problem, the report might give you some suggestions about where would be the best place to focus further diagnostics. The report might not show anything whatsoever out of the ordinary. But at least then you know there are lots of basic problems you don't have to deal with.

I just used EtreCheck to see if you can help me with my MacBook Pro.  It's having the same problem as the original poster.  Here is the report it generated:

    EtreCheck version: 2.9.12 (265)

    Report generated 2016-05-02 23:19:30

    Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

    Runtime 1:54

    Performance: Excellent

    Problem: Other problem

    Description:

Cursor keeps freezing when watching YouTube. The keyboard is also unresponsive (such as command-Q) EXCEPT FOR the power button.  When the power button is pushed for a second, the screen goes dark; when I touch the power button a second time, the screen comes on and the cursor is responsive again.  A few times, this hasn’t worked and I’ve had to hold down the power button til it restarts.

I have the same problem when watching mediasite (school class streaming service). The keyboard and mouse stop working, only the power button works. Another thing, when I close my laptop the apple logo is still on it won't turn off. I have to turn off the computer to make it work. Has happened like 4 times in the past 2 months
