Q: Apple Music plays wrong version of a song when playing an album

When I play certain albums – e.g. The White Stripes – “Elephant” or U2 – “The Joshua Tree” - certain songs are played in incorrect version (i.e. live, bootlegs etc). Other albums are played correctly. The versions played are taken from "My Music" which is connected to iTunes Match. It is only when I use Apple Music the problem occurs. When playing from My Music the songs are played correctly. Any idea what to do?

Well this is an annoying issue...

I do NOT even have Apply music. I only have Match.

    I'm finding a song I added from a CD:

    Song: Mr. Wendal

    Group: Arrested Development

Album: 3 Years, 5 Months And 2 Days In The Life Of...

is instead playing something that reminds me of a different hip hop group from around 1989:

    Back To Life

    Soul II Soul

    - A song I do not own... I used to have the CD back in 1989, so I remembered it (with a little help from google search)... but I lost that one decades ago...

The only connection these songs have is they were popular... 3 years apart... but for the same generation of listeners,  and both were from 'roots conscious' hip hop groups of the late 80s / early 90s...

I'd really like to have the song I own play, and not the other one... when I go to play it...

On top of all of the other problem with music match and iCloud music that doesn't work, it is infuriating when I am playing a released live album "David Live" (David Bowie live in Philly in '74") where some of the tracks are actually the like tracks and some of the tracks are just the studio tracks. I originally ripped this from a CD which I own and is in my own collection so I have no idea why in the world when the music goes into the cloud this horrible jumbling occurs where some of the tracks are from the live album and some are just from the studio tracks. The fact that so little care is made to match the tracks beyond what would appear the track and artist name which no regard for the file itself resembling the version of the track on the album is enough to drive me bonkers- and I am paying for this! I swear, this has been nothing short of a nightmare. Every time I sync up music I have along laundry list of songs that don't work, don't upload, are stuck in waiting, upload the wrong version won't play, etc... WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY DOING?!?!? Why is this services such a complete catastrophe?

Has anyone figured this out? I can only get it to play the right tacks if I make a playlist, but the album versions are all messed up. I do have lots of live tracks that get thrown in the middle of albums and it is driving me insane.

I've solved my problems with clean versions of my songs and just the wrong version period by turning off iCloud Music/Apple Music on my phone. Connecting my phone to iTunes and putting all the music I have excluding the ones I downloaded from Apple Music (it won't let you anyway) then turning iCloud Music/Apple Music back on on my phone and pressing merge instead of replace. All my Apple Music I download is back. My original music is unchanged and all my songs are on the right versions. The only problem is that I had to delete songs that I don't want on my phone one by one. That's the only aggravating part but my problems were solved.

I was thinking of doing that very thing but was wondering how I would find the time! It is insane that we have to jump through these hoops to make it work. The main problem is that finding music that is jacked up is an incremental process, and this work around is kind of an all-or-nothing fix in that it takes a lot of effort if, say, you find an affected album irregularly. What would be idea is if you could just check a freakn' box for a track so that Music Match would always use your version and never let Match override your version of that track. Since it is your cloud space that you are paying for, this is an easy solution to a stupid problem that wouldn't put any burden on Apple to make work except for the feature addition itself.

Sure. So in your settings, scroll down to music, then down to iCloud. Flip is off. Go back to your music and all your apple music should not be in your library. Also the music that you didn't download from Apple music should still be on your phone. Your music should go to the original version or the version you have. Connect your phone to your cpu and go to iTunes. Your phone should sync. After the syncing is finished, add all your music in your iTunes to your phone. (Because after you turn iCloud Music back on you will have all your music on your phone anywa) Unplug your phone from iTunes. Go back to the settings then music on yout phone. Turn the iCloud Music back one but make sure you hit merge instead or replace. If you hit replace, Apple Music will replace your music with different versions like before. The music  download from Apple Music should be back on your phone and the versions should be right again

Super weird: if I play Elliott smith New Moon off my music it plays right, if I play the same album off Apple Music, it plays live tracks.

aany thoughts? Still much better than nothing.

This can be fixed fairly easily. First, from a device other than the one you have your music files saved to, (it's best to have your music files saved to a computer through iTunes.) delete the affected songs from your iCloud Music Library. The songs will still be in your iTunes library on your computer with your music files, but you will see a cloud icon with an X. From this device, right click on the song and select "Add to iCloud Music Library." You should see the song re-appear on your other devices and the issue should be fixed. This will also work for random songs you have music files for that are "greyed out" for whatever reason. You will need to manually add these songs back to whatever playlists you had them in, but they will be working again.

Wow, so Apple FINALLY FIXED IT! It would have been nice had the notified me. I have had a case open with them Since 8/15. They were supposed to call me back anyway. Figures.

Anyway, THANK YOU for shining a light in my face to let me know this is resolved, albeit now I have to go through the process you describe. One thing I did notice is that when you have a set of music being uploaded to the cloud, you cannot queue any new tracks to be uploaded. You have to wait for the present upload to complete before you can add new items to upload, otherwise your request will be ignored. Am I the only one experiencing this?

This problem has frustrated me for months, but I have finally figured out a fairly easy solution. It has to do with how Apple Music assigns tracks you have to tracks they have in the Apple Music catalogue. The only way to fix a mis-pairing at the moment is to remove it from your iCloud music library and then add it back again. I had this happen with a few Led Zeppelin tracks that were playing Dread Zeppelin instead and Jimi Hendrix Little Wing was playing some obscure instrumental version.

Here is what you do: From a device other than the computer you save your music files to, delete the song from your iCloud Music Library. The song will still be in your iTunes library on the computer where the file is saved. You will see a cloud icon with an x in it. Right click on the track and select "add to iCloud Music Library." Apple music will either assign the track to the closest track it has in its music catalogue, or it will upload your track to iCloud. This is all based on the metadata you have on that track, so if you are still having problems, try editing the info on the song (right click, then "get info").

Keep in mind that when you remove a song from iCloud, it will also remove from any iCloud playlists you have, so you'll have to add it back again.

I "discovered" this solution a while back - while discussing this issue with some Apple Techs. And apparently their "matching" is getting much better. Still not perfect - and it is a pain if you have a large library - but at least it is better.

Well....I have gone through about 1/3 of my iTunes Library - deleting any album that I did not get from Apple Music and then re-adding the albums to my library. And while the "matching" seems MUCH, MUCH better than it has ever been, there are still the very occasional glitches. But so far they have been very rare.

Thanks Jnlybbert, your 'trick' really helped. It's a major pain in the neck to have to do that for the TONS of live/demo music I have in my library but it's something, and it's a start. I hope that when Apple release the new version of Apple Music (I heard it's coming out this June?) they will address this issue. Most real music lovers aren't just going to have standard songs that can be matched and replaced in the standard way.
