Have you looked at the Canon website?

Yes; the Canon website does not show a new driver for this model.  Is it time to upgrade my printer now?

Yes, I checked the Canon website. It does not show a new driver for this model (which is older but worked fine).  Is it time to upgrade my all-in-one printer now?

If there is no driver that makes the printer compatible with El Capitan, you can either revert back to the previous OS if you have a Time Machine backup or buy a new printer.  I wish there was another option.

The Canon site shows recent software updates (Easy Photo Print and My Image Garden) for that model, which usually indicate that it is compatible.

Not yet. You can use the MX310 v10.84 driver that was released for OS X 10.9 on El Capitan. It will install and operate fine.

Alternatively you could install Gutenprint and then select the MX310 Gutenprint driver in the Use menu.

Thanks PAHU for the tip, but I decided to just upgrade my ancient multi-function printer.

Why won't any link's work when I click on them here in the discussion board?  I'm trying to get to the drivers that everyone is recommending, but when I click on the link, it goes nowhere.  Can someone just post the URL so I can copy and paste?  I have a Canon MX310 that won't work after upgrading to El Capitan.  I'm following all of the advice but I just can't get to the driver as the link doesn't work.  Thanks!

Your image shows that you are printing via a shared printer that resides on Jose's iMac. Are you still able to print to the MX310 from this iMac? Because if you cannot then this Mac that is connecting to the shared printer on the iMac will not work either. Also, when you do connect to a shared printer, you usually do not need to install a driver on the Mac that is connecting to the share. The connection will result in some drivers files being installed from the iMac that is sharing the printer to this Mac that is connecting to the share.

If the iMac is still printing correctly to the MX310 but you find that you cannot get this Mac to work via the shared printer, then try connecting this Mac directly to the MX310 via USB. This should create a new printer in Printers & Scanners that you can use to test if this Mac can print. If it does work, then you can disconnect the USB cable from this Mac, reconnect the iMac to the MX310 and then try to print via the shared printer again.
