Q: Unexpeted error in airport express A1264 setup

Weird problem.  When i try to set i up on my home network (verizon router),  it cycles through setup, only to give me the unexpected error message ( trying to use it simply as an airplay connection for a stereo).  Whether on my phone or mac, it winds up knocking out wifi on the device to the point where I have to forget my network, and rejoin using the password.  Oddly, it worked perfectly when the tried to set it up at work on my phone.

Thanks,  Peter

One more issue with this.  Now my Imac won't connect to the internet. I tried to foget the network, but it doesn't help.  Oh boy!

I suggest that we start by temporarily taking the AirPort Express out of equation. This way we can verify that all of your wireless devices can access the Internet via Verizon-provided router. What is the make & model of this router?

Thank you.  It's a Verizon MI424WR. This morning, I was able to get the wifi working on the Imac by deleting this file from my library (com.apple.discoveryd.plist) and restarting.

Ah, the infamous discoveryd.  OS X Yosemite introduced discoveryd.plist. It replaced mDNSResponder (which was used since 10.2 Jaguar,) and has subsequently been discontinued with the release El Capitan because it was problematic.

mDNSResponder has many jobs: Resolving DNS names, resolving Bonjour machine names & Bonjour service advertisement and discovery, and opening ports in NAT gateways to allow incoming network connections. discoveryd has its share of bugs. For instance, when the system is unable to resolve DNS names, discoveryd log messages indicate that it doesn't recognize the replies from the DNS server to its own requests.

Hello, didn't get a chance to try yesterday, but I am having the same problem today.  Strangely, I can set it up with no problem on my work network, but no luck at home.  Just as before, the utility runs until it knocks the device off the internet, and then I get the same unexpected error message as before.  Please, any thoughts.

At this point I would recommend that you perform a "factory default" reset on the Express base station, and then, use the AirPort Utility to set it up for your home network as required.

OK, after way too many hours of trial and error, I figured out the problem.  My wifi network had a WEP password, but it appears that only a WPA2 password works with the airport express.  So, I changed the router to a WPA2 password, and had it going in about 5 minutes.  I guess that's why it worked on my work wifi network.
