May 4, 2016 10:33 AM in response to Barry Glasgalby Sparkleberry,Mine works on 2011 with secondary click set for right side. Are you sure you are clicking with the left side of your mouse button?
Conversely, if your secondary click is set for the left side, double clicking on the left will do nothing.

May 4, 2016 10:41 AM in response to Sparkleberryby Barry Glasgal,Yes, I'm using the left side. My mouse is configured to use the right click as a paste command. I was able to double click to select a word here as i am writing.

May 5, 2016 6:07 AM in response to Barry Glasgalby Sparkleberry,Hi Barry,
so is double click in Word still NOT working while the double click in another application such as the text editor here on the forum is working ?
If that is the case, I would dig up your product ID from your Office Install and completely remove it per instructions, then reinstall Office and then upgrade to current release. See some steps:
1 First be sure you have a current BU of your Mac.
2. Then your Office 2011 DVD with the product key #.
(How to locate product keys
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2279109
or here
)
3. Then remove Office according to MS instructions
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768
or
Or go here to DianefromOregon's site for help removing Office 2011:
http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/office-for-mac-2011-remove-office/
4. Reinstall Office 2011
5. Enter your Product #
6. Once Office 2011 is installed, update Office by going to Help menu within Word or Excel or PowerPoint and select Update.
7. Have a nice cold beverage !
The latest version of Office 2011 for the Mac is 14.6.3

May 5, 2016 6:18 AM in response to Sparkleberryby Barry Glasgal,Your statement is accurate: "so is double click in Word still NOT working while the double click in another application such as the text editor here on the forum is working ?" Yes!!
I am using the latest version of Office 2011 for the Mac : 14.6.3
You suggest a lot of work for a double click and there is no assurance that it will work. I'm going with step 7 and hope I get another suggestion.

May 5, 2016 8:21 AM in response to Barry Glasgalby Barry Glasgal,I got a better suggestion. Restart the Mac---and it worked!!

May 5, 2016 11:51 AM in response to Barry Glasgalby Sparkleberry,So it was the beverage AND the restart?
PS, it does not take long to reinstall Word, should you experience issues with 2011 later. Also, I noted elsewhere I had so many periodic crashes in Office that I wrote it off as just a feature from MS. Even a reinstall and did not cure it.
Eventually I just did an OS X Recovery. And that was the key. I thought the process would be difficult but it just took less than two hours and I have had no issues.
Just keep this link in your book marks the next time you have an issue with Office

Aug 26, 2016 11:59 AM in response to Barry Glasgalby jpdemers,This is a weird bug, which also exists with Word 2008. I didn't encounter it until I moved up to the Yosemite (and now El Capitan) OS. In my case, just quitting Word and re-starting it solves the problem - until it re-occurs a few weeks later. I have never been able to connect it to any other piece of software - I almost always have the same suite of programs running. Quickest bail-out is to save my open docs, force-quit Word, and re-launch it. Force-quit causes Word to re-open the docs that were open, so I'm back in business within a minute or two at most.
