Q: Pages does not open any file anymore except templates

From one day to the next Pages 5.6.1 does not open any file anymore on my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.11.3. I tried all means : “Open recent”, “Open...”, “Open with Pages”, to no avail. A restart does not help. Best regards.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

    Hi Ciroamos,

I understand you are having difficulty opening a Pages 5.6.1 document on your MacBook Pro.  Have you recently updated or changed the application?  Have you tried opening a Pages document on from iCloud Drive in addition to your computer? One thing I would try is to use Time Machine and go back to an earlier date and see if you can open a document.  If you can't, then you may need to uninstall the Pages application and re-download it from the Mac App Store.

I'll include some information below that will help you with these troubleshooting steps.

Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

    Restore specific files:

    1. Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu Time Machine icon, or click Time Machine in the Dock.

    2. Find the files to restore:

      • Use the timeline on the edge of the screen to see the files in your Time Machine backup as they were at that date and time. The timeline may also include local snapshots.
      •
      • Use the onscreen up and down arrows to jump to the last time the contents of the window changed. You can also use the search field in a window to find a file, then move through time while focused on changes to that file.
      •
      • Select a file and press Space Bar to preview the file and make sure it's the one you want.
    3. Click Restore to restore the selected file, or Control-click the file for other options.

    Download your past purchases

    Redownload an app

    On a Mac or PC

You can redownload apps for iOS devices in iTunes and apps for you computer in the Mac App Store.

    From the Mac App Store

    1. Open the Mac App Store.
    2. From the top of the window, click Purchases. Your purchased apps will appear.
      mac app store purchased apps
    3. Scroll to find the app you want to download.
    4. Click Install or Download to the right of the item you want to download. Your app downloads to your computer.

    Take care,

Thank you very much for your answer.

The file that had problems was a relatively large one : 283MB, with tables and pictures.

Since opening that particular file was an urgent matter, we transferred it from the MacBook Pro (4GB RAM, Pages 5.6.1, OS X 10.11.3) to an iMac (8GB RAM, Pages 5.6.1, OS X 10.11.4), where there was no problem opening it and working on it.

We figured out that somehow Pages on the MacBook Pro had been corrupted when treating that file. From a backup disk, using Time Machine, we restored Pages. The restored version is now able to open all files, except the large one. So, on the iMac, we split it into three smaller files, which Pages on the MacBook Pro doesn't have any problem handling.

For us the problem is now solved.

Thank you very much and best regards, Ciroamos
