Q: The first character is lost sometimes in spotlight window

The phenomenon is not always occurring. I launch spotlight with keyboard shortcut casually, then put some characters in its window immediately, however spotlight is searching wrong characters. I checked the characters then found the first character is missing. I surely press the key, but only first character is missing.

I think the phenomenon hasn't occurred on Yosemite, maybe from El Capitan. Has Spotlight functionality changed with any additional settings from El Capitan?

You mean, you are using Alfred.app instead of Spotlight? or was Spotlight behavior improved after installed Alfred in your mac?

Seems to be fixed in 10.11.4, at least it's working for me so far, fingers crossed!

I'm still getting this problem in 10.11.4, though not as often. Maybe 5% of the time rather than 40-50% of the time, which is what it was before I upgraded.

I haven't experienced this issue until recently, basically following the update to 10.11.4, so while it fixed the issue for Steve_NI, it's created the issue for me.

I've been getting this for a while and still get it in 10.11.4. It seems to happen the first time I call Spotlight after not using it for a while, and I've noticed that the first character I type appears to the left of the cursor. If I stop typing after that one character, the cursor sits there blinking after it. Subsequent characters appear after the cursor (as they should) and the first character disappears.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

    Thanks in advance,

Oops, I think my drugs hadn't yet come on. I got that wrong. I meant to say that the first character I type appears behind the cursor. So the next character I type replaces the first one, but if I stop after one character, it's after rather than before the cursor.

I didn't make this very clear in my description above, but I managed to get a screenshot of it happening. I just opened Spotlight and typed 'm'. You'll see the 'm' appeared before the cursor. Here I stopped and took a screenshot. The next thing I typed, 'a', appeared where it should, after the cursor, and the 'm' disappeared. (I missed the cursor flashing on in the second screenshot, but the cursor is after the 'i'.)

So I wanted to type 'mai' (to get Mail) but instead ended up with just 'ai', and would have opened Airport Utility if I'd just hit Return as I usually do.

I hope this makes it clear. It's obviously a bug. Where do I report a bug?

I've had this issue since upgrading to El Capitan from Mavericks and my workaround is to precede every search with a space - if it overwrites the first character, great, if it doesn't, it gets ignored by the search. So, instead of Command-Space <whatever>, it's Command-Space Space <whatever>.

Found a thread on Reddit about this and someone posted this solution:

    "Hey guys,

I had the same problem. I always launch Spotlight using the CMD + SPACE keyboard shortcut. The problem would occur almost every time I launched Spotlight using the keyboard shortcut and then immediately typed, for example, the name of an app. I was able to get Spotlight to stop eating the first letter by disabling this setting…

    - System Preferences

    - Spotlight

    - UNCHECK Allow Spotlight Suggestions in Spotlight and Look up

Hope this helps until Apple fixes it.

    -Taylor"

    Worked for me.

Same thing here. I use the keyboard shortcut (command spacebar) to launch apps. Just now, in an attempt to launch Pages, the letter P disappeared. Very annoying.
