I just got  a new Imac 27. Is there a way I can somehow copy the people  that I chat with on messages to the new computer, not necessicarily the messages but the contacts

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Your Contacts application should have your contacts from Messenger.      You can group them together into one Contact Group, and drag that Group into a folder that you create for them on your old Mac.  Mind you most of this stuff will transfer with the Migration Assistant.  The only times you may not want to use the Migration Assistant is if the drive is smaller on the new Mac, or the old Mac is PowerPC (meaning it dates from early 2006 or earlier).

    Hi,

In System Preferences > iCloud or the service of your choice in Internet account enable syncing for Contacts.

This places all the Contacts in the relevant cloud.

This can then be picked up by setting the new computer to Sync with the same service.
