Q: Apple TV 4 - Home Sharing Slideshows - Scratching my head...

Hey guys, I've had my Apple TV 2 for a million years. I love it. One of the features I enjoy the most is the home sharing+itunes+Apple TV (2)+Computers+photos combo to put my 20k+ photos on the big screen, as slideshows (mostly using Ken Burns) with music using an iTunes playlist and screen saver (normally floating theme)...

So, I got my new 32GB flashy Apple TV 4 and...

- Home sharing seems to work fine

- I can share all that content without problems, as far as I can tell

but:

- The slideshow music settings are gone... in ATV2 you set a playlist in the slideshow settings and you're all set. ATV4 = nowhere to be found.

- Photos show out of order sometimes, not consistently (?). They start fine, then out of nowhere, it randomly presents some pictures out of the album. Seems like a bug to me.

- I can only start a slideshow from the beginning. (in my Apple 2 I can choose a photo and run the slideshow from that point). Seems like another bug to me.

(I haven't checked slideshows in the Photos app, because I can't care less about putting my stuff in the cloud, to be honest. Same with the music stuff.)

So, I'm not a happy camper right now. I'm I missing something or this is a really half baked $150 bucs thing? This feels more like a downgrade than an upgrade so far except for being faster (and I'll leave the whining about the remote control, the keyboard situation, siri, bluetooth for another time).

Thanks!

I wonder if the error affects only individual devices or all? Do you know someone who can use the slide show without any problems?

The same here. I just updated my ATV4 to the newest software version. Nothing seems to be fixed regarding the slide shows.

For the moment I downgraded to my old ATV2. Slideshows run very nicely on that device.

    On Apple TV 2:

    • Slideshows run in the correct picture order
    • can be paused and restarted anytime
    • can be startet from any selected picture
    • come with music

I am really frustrated about the poor support of slideshows in Apple TV 4. I am very close to trying slideshows on an Amazon Kindle Fire TV stick. If that will work better, I think I will leave the Apple TV products.

    Samaki,

Yes I agree, even Tim Cook should be seeing this while showing off his Apple TV to his friends!  So why no fix?  I work in hardware design and what is frustrating to me, as engineers we come up with the most creative metal only changes using the fewest metal layers to our designs when a bug has been found in a chip and we fix it.  Here all that is needed is a editor, and a few lines of code, some regression testing and release the fix, not expensive masks that have to be created.  I just don't understand the expectations that software managers have on their teams.  This is happening in living rooms all over the world what would be more important to fix?

Yep, very frustrating. I'm a software guy, a Product Manger. This is a poor quality product in my book, and the lack of action fixing some of these things that are very simple (and before I get nailed by someone, I repeat, I'm a software PM, > 20 years in the industry, I know this stuff) a junior programmer would take care of all in a day or 2, it means to me they don't care, have other priorities, higher than their customer's experiences. And as a customer, I can't forget I'm not expecting them to do me a favor to fix it... I paid $150 for something that was presented to me as "the next... blah blah blah" compared with what I had (ATV 2 and ATV 3) and it ended up being a regression instead. Sorry for the ranting...

Just upgraded my ATV4 to OS 9.2.  I really hoped the slideshow would finally be fixed.  NOT!  My 5s slideshow from my computer plays exactly 7 photos and then stops every time.  Allowing shuffling still only plays 7 photos.  If I set it at 3s (no-repeat), it seems to continue playing, but it does so with repeats.

    Hello All,

I really appreciate this post! I'm an ATV3 user and the slideshow is the the glue that keeps me on the ATV. My current ATV3 constantly resets so I have been considering the upgrade to ATV4 - I won't be doing that if I cannot have a solid slideshow experience. I have +25k pictures on iCloud, my large screen TV is absolutely the best way to make use of this treasure (photos). My family and extended family come over and are always excited to sit and look at old photos, we laugh joke and reminisce. I'm really getting frustrated with the way Apple just pulls the rug out from under it's customers during upgrades.

    Hello rdgen,

Regarding your ATV 3 constantly resetting, you might try a full software restore, Restore your Apple TV through iTunes - Apple Support since your software may be corrupted. This is a large download, so be prepared to wait a while.

I did a quick test and today's Apple TV update may have fixed it,

Agreed, yesterday's update has fixed the slideshow madness. Well at least slides now play again in order. What's still missing is the ability to start a slideshow from the currently selected/displayed slide (possible on any other platform ever sold by Apple).

The update hasn't fixed anything. My screensaver will only show the same handful of pictures and just repeat.

If I manually browse to my pictures and start a slide show, it lasts for maybe 10 seconds and just stops.

The slide show on the first apple tv was so amazing and it has just slowly gotten worse and worse.

I haven't tried the screensaver either, just the slideshow.  I did try it with the Ken Burns on 2 seconds per slide.  I haven't gone through other parameters to try them yet.

I will give it a try this evening or this weekend though.

Hello to all.  I'm mainly interested in slideshow and I bought a few days ATV4, I have the product being tested and there is still time to change it or take a ATV3 made with full refund.  There can be no third-party software to do slideshow?  I have to bring back the ATV4 and purchase the ATV3?  I'm really shocked, I give me some advice?

I'm with you all. I think this (and other similar, obvious "oversights") are inexplicable, and unacceptable. And, strangest of all, Apple has done all the hard work of designing this product (fine, capable-enough hardware) and a hardly-trivial online services platform... and then completely abandoned their post on the should-be-easy software stuff that could actually makes their products and services work in a useful, necessary way.

Why are you tagging rants on the end of old threads, if you have a question ask it in your own thread.
