"MegaBackup" is either an untrustworthy cloud-storage application or perhaps actual malware. I haven't tried to make that distinction. To remove it, please start by backing up all data (not with MegaBackup itself, of course.) Then take the steps below.

    1. Select the Login Items tab in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. Delete any items with a name beginning in "MegaBackup".

    2. Log out or restart the computer.

    3. Drag the MegaBackup application from the Applications folder to the Trash and empty.

Note that you can't delete any application by trying to drag its icon from the LaunchPad or the Dock. You must open the Applications folder in the Finder.

You may have installed ad-injection malware along with "MegaBackup." If you're seeing unaccustomed popup ads in a web browser, ask for further instructions.

Thank you so much. With your help I managed to get rid of it. I don't know if there are any left-over files etc.

    Regards

I don't know if there are any left-over files etc.

None that will have any effect, but as I wrote earlier, you might have installed adware along with "MegaBackup." If you did, you'll be seeing intrusive ads on web pages where you didn't see them before, or you may be unable to load some web pages. If those things aren't happening, you're done.

I deleted the app (never clicked on anything other than what I thought was an Adobe update.  Am still getting a pop-up that says System Scan is recommended.  Any idea how I might get rid of that? And what else should I be looking for and do if this MegaBackup app added malware/adware??

    Thanks

    This didn't work for me.

MegaBackup doesn't show up in my applications - (Mac mini)

I killed it using the activity monitor - but the MegaBackupAgent remains.

This junk just showed up the other day, and I have no idea why.

I'm still trying to get rid of it, no luck so far :-(

You may have installed ad-injection malware ("adware").

Don't use any kind of "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" product on a Mac. There is never a need for it, and relying on it for protection makes you more vulnerable to attack, not less.

    Back up all data first.

If you're not already running the latest version of OS X, updating or upgrading in the App Store may cause the adware to be removed automatically. If you are already running the latest version, please log out or restart the computer. Again, some kinds of malware will be removed—not all. There is no such thing as automatic removal of all possible malware, either by OS X or by third-party software. That's why you can't rely on software to protect you.

If the malware is removed in your case, you'll still need to make changes to the way you use the computer to protect yourself from further attacks. Ask if you need guidance.

If the malware is not removed automatically, see below.

This easy procedure will detect any kind of adware that I know of. Deactivating it is a separate, and even easier, procedure.

Some legitimate software is ad-supported and may display ads in its own windows or in a web browser while it's running. That's not malware and it may not show up. Also, some websites carry intrusive popup ads that may be mistaken for adware.

If none of your web browsers is working well enough to carry out these instructions, restart the computer in safe mode. The malware will be disabled temporarily.

    Step 1

Please triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents

    In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. Press return. Either a folder named "LaunchAgents" will open, or you'll get a notice that the folder can't be found. If the folder isn't found, go to the next step.

If the folder does open, press the key combination command-2 to select list view, if it's not already selected. Please don't skip this step.

There should be a column in the Finder window headed Date Modified. Click that heading twice to sort the contents by date with the newest at the top. If necessary, enlarge the window so that all of the contents are showing.

Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Take a screenshot of a window." An image file with a name beginning in "Screen Shot" should be saved to the Desktop. Open the screenshot and make sure it's readable. If not, capture a smaller part of the screen showing only what needs to be shown.

Start a reply to this message. Drag the image file into the editing window to upload it. You can also include text in the reply.

Leave the folder open for now.

    Step 2

Do as in Step 1 with this line:

    /Library/LaunchAgents

The folder that may open will have the same name, but is not the same, as the one in Step 1. As in that step, the folder may not exist.

    Step 3

    Repeat with this line:

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

This time the folder will be named "LaunchDaemons."

    Step 4

Open the Safari preferences window and select the Extensions tab. If any extensions are listed, post a screenshot. If there are no extensions, or if you can't launch Safari, skip this step.

    Step 5

If you use the Firefox or Chrome browser, open its extension list and do as in Step 4.

    Thanks for your help!

I didn't intentionally install this MegaBackup so I don't really know how or why it showed up.  I felt as though I was working on an old Windows computer instead of my beloved Mac with all these annoying and malware looking popups.  I couldn't seem to force quit the MegaBackupAgent in the Activity Monitor, and I never found the MegaBackup app in applications.   I know it sounds crazy... all of it,  and you think I'm mistaken about this.. I'm not though.

I cleaned unnecessary files, backed-up, shutdown and restarted.  Only then was I able to Force quit MegaBackupAgent in the Activity Monitor.

I'm so careful not to click on any links or travel to suspicious places, I'm baffled as to how this crappo agent landed on my Mac.

Thanks for replying, appreciate your assistance.

Thanks for taking a look.  It happened on 9/15 with a prompt for an adobe flash update.  These screen captures are from 9/16.  Thanks again.

    Ok.  Here goes.

After following Linc Davis's (thank you, by the way) procedure to delete Megabackup files, which was successful,

Download and install Malwarebytes (Apple Support recommended)

Scan & delete everything that pops up...and lots popped up!!  See below...

Search Malwarebytes (see top hit below), download and install; I even permitted Malwarebytes auto-updates....

    Screen Shot 2016-09-17 at 9.47.19 PM.png

...Scan and find all the junk that Megabackup sleezeware left on the computer; all those listed below were on mine (I deleted my computer user name from the image for this public space)....

    Screen Shot 2016-09-17 at 9.33.15 PM.png

    Screen Shot 2016-09-17 at 9.33.23 PM.png

...hit Remove Selected Items button and be rid of them!

Then restart your computer.  It fixed the funky stuff that was happening with my browser too...ahhhh.

The only leftover is the sign-in sound was changed by this sleezeware - /chooooon/.  I still have that sound; just need to go find what it needs to change back to, but everything is gone otherwise.

Hope this HELPS!!  My deepest thanks to Linc Davis here and Marlene at Apple!!
