Just what did you purchase from Apple? A copy of the original install disk? Or the 10.6.3 retail SLdisk?

    Per

OS X versions and builds included with Mac computers - Apple Support

Your Mac originally cam with 10.6.4 or 10.6.4. If it cam with 10.6.4 then the 10.6.3 disks will not install.

Have you contacted Apple like the message said?

You will need the original Snow Leopard installation disk that came with your MBP in order to install 10.6.  I have tried to use the Snow Leopard retail disk (white in color) on my 2010 MBP with NO success even though both are 10.6.3.

    Ciao.

I Purchased the regular Snow leopard retail disk and it didn't

work re I haven't contacted Apple support yet because it will

cost money for them to help me out . They charge per call

to guide me thru the repair of mbp. so I'm trying to get it

bback up and working thru a lot of reading about the X

operating system, on which buttons to try as its starting up

on how to fix the problem. So I'm still stuck on the gray screen

with the the apple logo . And ideas on what to do, what things

to try to get my 2010 mbp back on track . Please help and thanks.

You can not install an older OS X than what your Mac shipped with originally.

The poster finally said they have a "2010 mbp".

That MBP originally can with Snow Leopard but needs a version later that the retain Snow Leopard which are only 10.6.3.

The poster needs to contact Apple and purchase a copy of the install disks that originally came with the that MBP. They may be able to return the retail SL disk

Ah yes, thanks lllaass.  Quite the conundrum, but sage advice given.

Did you try booting into recover mode to see what OS X you can reinstall from this environment.

    Recovery  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

If you where running Mavericks it seems you could reinstall that from a backup, then upgrade.

One problem is 4GB of RAM is horribly inefficient once you leave Snow Leopard behind.

    • If the Mac has Mavericks in it, even if totally screwed up, the Snow Leopard installer will NOT allow a downgrade. Only way would be erasing the drive and starting afresh (losing all your current content in the process).
    • IIRC, a 2010 model does not support Internet Recovery Mode. And if the volume is damaged, fair chance locally based Recovery Mode got screwed too.
    • Agree on the RAM, with the newer full-64bit systems. If and when this gets sorted out and a newer OS is back up and running, consider at least an 8GB RAM upgrade.

Would you not want to upgrade to El Capitan?
