Q: A better way

This didn't work for me (mid-2012 MacBook Pro; OS 10.11.4; iTunes 12.3.3.17).

What did work was the procedure outlined by Kenichi Watanabe here:

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), iTunes 12.3.3.17

The iTunes Plus program was ended years ago. The knowledge base article you cite, basicaly, instructs to get the iTunes Match subscription in order to get access to non-DRM versions of your purchased songs.

iTunes Match is a paid service. I assume you did not subscribe to it, so, Yes, it would not work.

Actually, I *had* subscribed to iTunes Match. But when I followed the upgrade procedure outlined in the article (go to iTunes Store, search in "Purchased," download), I still got a protected file. What worked was to remove the download and click on the Cloud icon. In other words, I found everything to be exactly as the reply by Kenichi Watanabe described it in the link I posted. I posted in hope of helping others who might encounter the same issue.

(go to iTunes Store, search in "Purchased," download),

Before you do this, remove the track from iTunes.
