Q: Chronic GPU panic? (mid-2010 MacBook Pro)

I bought a great laptop--I expected it to last many years. However, I have experienced chronic GPU panic over the last few years (sent reports to Apple each time) and looking back, seems to coincide with OS X upgrades. I understand this issue was remedied by an Apple QP which now ended. I was never aware or made aware that this was a problem or potential problem until late last year via these forums. Is replacement the only remedy? I'm reluctant to spend more money, as I have also just replaced the original HD due to failure.

Surely there are enough of us out on a limb here that Apple could extend this repair period.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

You have the misfortune of having a model identifier 6.2 MBP that is experiencing GPU problems. There was a replacement program on these models but that has expired.

You can have the logic board replaced, but that will be at your expense.

You may download this application as an interim measure:

    https://gfx.io

This will allow you to disengage the discrete GPU and use only the integrated one. This will stop the kernel panics but at the expense of graphics performance.

    Ciao..

I appreciate this response. I've researched this fix on other forums--they report that this fix is really temporary; once its used a while the system will revert to discrete switching. Hoping for something more stable--short of replacing the logic board. Seems like a software issue that could be resolved thru Apple's developers if an app like the one you mentioned will make a difference in some cases.

I have not seen any other alternatives that will address the issue you are dealing with.  I do not have this problem, so I cannot say with 100% certainty, but unless some condition is changed, intuitively I find it difficult to believe that software will in time become ineffectual.

I would urge to to install it and experience the results your self.  You will be no worse off than you are now.

    Ciao.

GPU panic issue is not related to os x. Apple assembled defective nvidia card inside mbpro 15 mid 2010.

You must buy a new motherboard to fix it but is better to buy a new Mac

or try this patch (is working for me. My mbpro is running OS X El Capitan):

Only way to fix Mac Book Pro 15 Mid 2010 by software is older gfxCardStatus 1.8.1

(download site: https://software.com/mac/apps/gfxcard... or whenever you find it)

don't try newer versions !!!! it will no work. Then install gfxCardStatus 1.8.1. in menu check mark: Intel Only. in preferences, check mark:Load gfx.. at startup. and. Restore last used mode at startup

It will never shutdown but it will never use nvidia graphic card

I have been having this issue since December 2015. Am just about to take it into an Apple store. I have kept a number of the crash reports for reference (where they're reported that is), as well as reporting sending the obligatory crash report to Apple.

My issue with this is not the diagnosis, but with the admission by Apple that there is a problem. Has anyone checked whether they can put a time frame on repairing the problem at their cost as they have admitted there is a manufacturing fault?

Considering the clear fact that there is an admission there is fault with the design and/or build don't the owners of said device have the right of repair irrespective of whether it is 1 year or 5 years old?

If it was a car or a washing machine there would be no time limit.

My logic board was replaced early on when I first got my macbook pro mid 2010 15" but it didn't fix it. I was clear until the next system upgrade and the kernel panic attacks came back faster and with greater frequency. I gave up trying to get Apple to fix the problem since it was frustrating to speak to anyone at Apple about the attacks "did you do x, how about y, are you sure you didn't z?". Eventually I put my macbook pro away for a number of years since I had an iPad and my iPhone that could compensate.

It wasn't until I started searching again for a solution early last year that I found out about the GFX program and about the now expired replacement program. I stumbled across the replacement program for the 2011s and such thinking it was something I could take advantage of but to no avail.

I wonder if its worth battling Apple to try to get the logic board replaced again. Its clear the first time didn't solve it and there are a number of us still plagued by the issue. My macbook pro was saved due to the GFX program and I've made upgrades to make him run brand new but I cant take advantage of a number of programs that require the NVADIA graphics card and I cant use an external monitor since it switches to discrete mode.

I would just be happy if they could somehow enable the macbook pros to remain on integrated mode so I could use an external display. Does anyone know if thats possible yet?
