Q: Contacts (including groups) won't export

Can't get my Contacts (5800+ cards and 200+ groups) to export. The metadata folder of the created contacts backup.abbu file is empty. I am trying to create a backup file to use for importing into a different iCloud account

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

If you need to make a backup copy of your iCloud contacts, take a look at the Contacts section of the resource below:
Archive or make copies of your iCloud data
