Q: Turning Off "Increase Storage"

Is there a way around the issue of notifications etc on Icloud storage, but still somehow manage to use it.

I still have, and intend to keep at that amount, the entry level free 5GB.   It appears that I am only using 1.5 GB, as it tells me I have 3.5GB available.

My iphone also helpfully tells me every morning that my backup has failed and that I need to buy more storage.  I do not want to ... don't keep telling me every day !!

Further, it will not use that "available" 3.5GB,  As far as I can understand, I must have photos on my phone (or something) that is >3.5GB.  However, rather than use that 3.5GB for as many photos (or whatever) as possible, it stops.  And then tells me to buy more ...

I guess I can turn icloud off altogether (?) but that has other ramifications ...

Any way to get this annoying feature "silenced" ?

Mac OS X (10.7.1)

Turn off backup no need to turn off iCloud completely. Obviously phone will want to do full backup or nothing.

Just a thought - try turning off iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone:

Tap Settings --> iCloud --> Photos. At the top, there's a switch for "iCloud Photo Library". If it's turned on, turn it off.

    Hope this helps.

Unfortunately this cannot be "silenced". All you can do is select what you want to backup in Settings > iCloud. I only have Contacts and Safari on and I only use a fraction of the free 5 GBs so I don't get the "annoying" reminders. Photos is a large data usage.

Backup captures everything on iPhone, no way to exclude things. Photo library and backup are not related features although both keep pictures in cloud one is visible cross devices backup is not.

One solution is to backup on PC or Mac via iTunes.

Guess I never run into this issue since I delete photos from my iPhone after importing to my Mac I stand corrected. I never get that Increase Storage message as a result. I do sync my photos to my iPad, but I do that through iTunes (as you mentioned), not the iCloud Photo Library. It's turned off on all my devices.

You can indeed control what gets backed up in an iCloud backup. See this Apple article:

Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

See the section titled:  Select which iOS apps to back up. It states:

Many apps automatically back up to iCloud after you install them. You can change which apps back up to iCloud and remove existing backups of that app's data from your storage.

Use these steps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

    Tap Settings > iCloud.

If you're using iOS 8 or later, tap Storage > Manage Storage.

Tap the name of your iOS device.

Under Backup Options, turn off any apps that you don't want to back up. When you're asked to confirm, choose Turn Off & Delete to turn off Backup for that app and remove all of its data from iCloud.

Be aware that this is only for those App's data, not the app itself.

It does sound like you have Auto Backup enabled.

It tells you every day day because it fails every day.

Settings > iCloud > Backup... turn this to OFF.

The Photo Library will keep syncing until you run out of iCloud space. You will get notices however.

True but on the previous Settings page one can control some of the Apps thus managing to a degree the size of the backup. This is how I do it.
