May 8, 2016 1:01 PM in response to lllaassby sliceofpai,Hi lllaass,
Thank you for the quick response! It doesn't show up when connected to both USB ports. Other USB devices work. It doesn't show in system profiler under USB. The device trees show USB 3.0 hi-speed bus and USB 3.0 superspeed bus with internal items connected (keyboard/trackpad).

The one that showed up in disc utility is a Seagate 8tb backup drive

May 9, 2016 1:32 AM in response to sliceofpaiby lllaass,Only drives that have a format that a Mac can read or write too shows in Finder. What is format of the Seagate?
Are both the Toshiba and Seagate powered the same way? USB powered or separate AC power adopter?
-
May 9, 2016 1:51 AM in response to lllaassby sliceofpai,They've both been formatted for Mac and I've been using both for backups and storing files.
The Seagate is powered by separate AC adaptor while the Toshiba is only USB (no other adaptors)
Would it help to purchase a new cord for the Toshiba? It's weird that it still works with other Macbooks though!
Thank you

May 9, 2016 12:11 PM in response to sliceofpaiby lllaass,Try booting to Internet Recovery and see if Disk Utility in Internet Recovery can see the HD.
You may be able to force your Mac to boot into Internet Recovery by holding down Command+Option+R at startup.
Since internet recovery does not uses software on the Mac if it does not work that would indicate a hardware problem with the Mac. I would then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
