Q: Ipod nano wont work with vista

A friend of mine got an IPod as a birthday gift.

Every time I plug a friends IPod into either her or my computer, it keeps coming up with an error. I know what the problem is though.

She has a vista machine and I still have an XP (I have a special decal printer which won't work on anything above XP).  The last version which 'works' with the vista machine is 12.1.

The IPod nano keeps saying that it requires 12.2 or later.

We can't get a new computer just for one IPod so what can we do to get it to work.

I would suggest still making the software and units compatible for people who can not afford to continually upgrade everything and spend money all the time.

Either update the software to recognize the hardware in the IPod, or keep the lower firmware in the IPod and get it upgraded when they connect to ITunes.

I know quite a few people will say to upgrade, but as we are unemployed, we are struggling to live at the moment.

Is there any way to 'dumb down' the firmware so it will work with 12.1?

John.

A new computer will do much more than just connect to the iPod...  And it doesn't need to be a "new" computer.  Macs as old as a 2007 iMac can run the latest version of the Mac's OS (free upgrade), and the latest version of iTunes.  For Windows, it needs to be Windows 7 or later to run the latest iTunes.  It's not a free upgrade, but the Windows Vista PC can probably be upgraded.

There is no way to downgrade the iPod's onboard software.

    Problem solved.....in a way.

My son has a Windows 7 computer.  I installed the latest version of ITunes on his computer. I put the MP3 files on my jump drive and then copied it to his one. Started ITunes and copied them across.

As they say, where there's a will, there's a way.
