Q: Computer recognizes projector but projector does not recognize computer

Hey, so I'm running OSX El Capitan 10.11.4 and I'm trying to ho up my projector via thunderbol/mini display port. My computer recognizes my adapter and thus the projector but my projector is still stuck on searching for source. The projector is an Optoma idk what year but kinda old. Was wondering if tec is just not comparable but I feel like it should be because I'm still just doing vga... plz help! Thanks!

    Hi there Josh!

If I understand correctly you have your computers Thunderbolt port connected to a projectors mini display port and the computer seems to recognize the projector but the projector is not picking up the signal. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article named:

Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac

Start with "Before you begin" and then move on to "If the display image is blank or unusable" if needed. This should troubleshoot the Mac side of the equation. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, all the best!

Usually this means that your mac is trying to output at a resolution or frame rate that the projector does not support.

Normally, the mac and the projector should be able to reach "common ground" without user intervention, but sometimes this fails.

You could open System Preferences->Displays and switch to a lower resolution for the projector.
