Q: Battery problem after update to IOS 9.3.1

I updated my Iphone 5 to IOS 9.3.1 about a week ago, whereafter the battery drained within 3-4 hours. I thought that the battery finally packed up and ordered a new one !

The problem still exists, now the battery lasts max. 5 hours.

Any solution apart from switching off many of the standard features ?

iPhone 5, iOS 9.3.1, null

I now seem to have my battery back (said quietly).

I have not changed any settings or setup as a new iPhone again since my last post four days ago and on Tuesday night I had my phone plugged in over night charging but this time I had my phone switched off and also had my apple watch switched off as well as my iPad so all three of my devices were off and left off over night with my iPhone charging. Waking up on Wednesday switching my iPhone on first and then my watch with yesterday battery going down from 100% to 70% with the iPhone switch off last night and back on again in the morning and now showing as 61%. This now looks like my three days before a charge will come back. I know that robnbill said previously that the issue maybe was related to multiple devices but if this has resolved my issue with a trapped messaging service in one or all devices and to power off all and start phone first then it would be an idea if anyone else out there is still having the issue and has multiple devices with the same apple account try powering off all devices, leave off over night (not sure if all night is needed but that's what I did) and power on your phone first in the morning.

If this is the case or it is a combination of things as I last setup as a new iPhone on Sunday but I have setup the same way the last three time and have setup as a new phone and from a restore 6 times now then this could of saved me a **** of a time just to "turn it off n on again"!

Interested to find out if this works for anyone else???

Cheers for your help and assistance with things robnbill

Yesterday was the first day in weeks I have seen normal battery life out of the phone.  Two days ago I placed my phone in my work bag and didn't use it from 9-3 and when I pulled it out of the bag I had 3% battery left.  No apps open just sitting at lock screen.  Yesterday I did the same thing and the phone was at 88% and by end of day it was at 83%.  The real question is what fixed it or is it fixed????   Something has to be getting hung up and draining the battery.  I also review my AT&T bill last month and data usage went from a normal 5gb or so to 22gb.  I don't recall ever using that much data.

I loaded beta 5 this morning but I have not found what that actually is supposed to be fixing.

I looked at the battery usage and the only thing that looked strange to me was the usage and standby time were pretty close.  I don't know how the usage time would get so high considering the phone was not in use and on the lock screen.  I had not been resetting my data stats so those were not accurate at all.

Me too, I thought it was related to me powering off all of my Apple devices and leaving over night and powering up my iPhone first, but maybe not???

    You're welcome - I thought I'd post this summary:

    Summary of this issue:

If Usage and Standby times are close together and you have an unusual high data usage (can tell when on cell) - likely one of these steps will help you:

    • DFU your iPhone - Restore as New - Add Apps from App Store - Not Backup (Has been working for 10+ days)
    • Turn off all your iOS and OS X devices - turn them back on one-by-one (worked for me for 1.5 days)

Other easy to try approaches that seems to work for some people (I have not tried these):

    • Reset your Apple ID Password via appleid.apple.com
    • Turn off iCloud Keychain on all your iOS & OS X devices - reboot them

    MY opinion:

    • Caused by a single system task (identityservices) looping on an iCloud queue (Credentials?)
    • Nothing to do with location services, background refresh, wifi assist, etc.
    • I reported to Apple in detail - likely I will not hear back - hopefully someone reviews
    • If you don't have a problem - good for you - some of us do!

Restoring the phone as new might be an answer for some but not for me...   If that is the only answer to correct the issue,  It might just be enough to push me away from Apple.  I have had nothing except IPhones since they came out and starting over from scratch again at this point would be a lot of trouble.  Resetting all the apps back up from scratch would take a long time.

I'm holding out for the fix not the work around.

I see your point - it was somewhat painful to do a DFU.  It may be that the DFU simply cleared a queue issue - nothing else.  It could come back.  In my case I'm glad I did it since my Apple supplied new iPhone actually had another Apple ID attached to it.  They fixed it quickly - but didn't explain how it got there even though it was bought new directly from Apple.  Maybe it was the cause - a mystery in any event.

I spent a great deal of time scouring various forums and the issue of what I term a 'runaway' system task rears it's head in various versions every now and then.  It's got to be some very unusual combination of data events/records/etc. that cause a system task to loop on a queue.  It shouldn't and must be fixed.

My guess is Apple is looking at this and will fix it - hopefully in the next point version.

The other 'easy' workarounds - in particular, the changing of your Apple ID password works - at least that's what I see reported.  If it comes back for me - I'll try it - pretty straightforward - a good idea to change your password once and a while anyhow.

I think I finally found what was causing my battery drain.  The ability to make and receive calls on the Mac seems to drain the battery quickly.  I turned that feature off and the battery lasted well over a day with light usage.  Turn it back on and within minutes I could see the battery percentage drop and after about a hour it has dropped 5%.  Turn this one feature back off and battery was good the rest of the day. I don't know why all the sudden this started happening but atleast I have a fix until Apple gets the devices to play nicely again.

This is the change I made:

Settings>Phone>Calls on Other Devices>Allow calls on

Turned off Make calls on Mac.  I was able to leave the other IPhone on and no drain detected.

    Hi,

I would like to describe my problem with iPhone 6 Plus 64gb (9.3.1). Since April 28 i have noticed huge battery drain when my phone is locked (no apps running in background, everything is off, location services etc.). Battery draining is about 10%/1h (phone is in airplane mode). When i am using the phone, battery is acting normal, i can even say perfect but when i lock the screen, phone becomes warm and battery % going down. Ive tried everything (DFU with new phone, erase all settings) nothing helped, i dont know how to use those XCODE instruments thing (can't select phone - grayed).

All the Apple Support solutions fails.

Dunno what to do, hope iOS 9.3.2 will fix this.

    Hi,

I assume you did a DFU - set up as a new - and did not restore from backup - that's what worked for me.

If your phone is recognized in iTunes (first) - Xcode should recognize it.  I don't know what to suggest - other than restart Xcode  and Instruments and see if it gets recognized.

If you are having the issue with the system task running away -- you may be able to tell another way.  In my case iOS itself was recording problems with this task.  Look at your diagnostics log.  If you see one or more entries that looks similar to this:  ExcResource_identityservicesd-2016-MM-DD . . .  - you likely have the same issue as I did.

The post immediately above yours is another possible fix (the one by GarretN).  It's the first time I have seen that one as a possibility.

These have also been reported to work (I have not tried them).  Somehow the queue that the system task has been looping on needs to be disrupted - perhaps one of these do that too.

    • Reset your Apple ID Password via appleid.apple.com
    • Turn off iCloud Keychain on all your iOS & OS X devices - reboot them
    • Lastly - you could have battery drain due to another issue.  One, which I think is more common, is an app that is always permitted to have Location Services Always On - as opposed to Only When Using.  You might want to check those too.

My usage and standby times were almost the same when I was having issues..  Is that what yours is showing?

Just to confirm you did the following and it made no difference?

Settings>Phone>Calls on Other Devices>Allow calls on

Turned off Make calls on Mac.  I was able to leave the other IPhone on and no drain detected.

Mine has been working great for the last few days with the above turned off.
