Q: Copy project and media to new hard drive

Greetings,

I have a very large project stored on an external hard drive and would like to copy the entire thing including the linked original media to a new hard drive... since i fear my old one may stop working soon. How can I go about copying my project to a new hard drive along with all sound, music and video still linked?

Thanks for your help.

    Hi there.

You can create a transfer library in the UI and move the project to it. (It will copy it since you're moving it to a new drive,)

If you also move the media, it will break the links between the project and the media (video and audio). At that point, use the Relink command (from the File menu). If you point it to the right volume, it should find the media and offer you the option to relink.

    Good luck.

If by "project" you actually mean "library", then just copy the library and the media to the new drive. To make sure everything is working, eject the original drive, and open the copied library. All you may have to do is relink media, and everything should be working.

    Thanks for all your help,

Unfortunately I'm looking for a means to transfer everything including the original linked media without needing to re-link it... I have so many sound effects/clips/music tracks/compound clips... That im trying to bypass re-linking. Is there any other way? I really appreciate your help.

If you need to move both the media and the projects/library and you don't want to relink, then I suggest that you create the transfer library I mentioned earlier on the new drive. Within FCPO X, move the projects into the new library. Use the Modify Settings button to set your storage locations for the media. Then use the Consolidate command to gather all of the media into the location of your choice.

Best to test the new library before trashing anything.

    Good luck.
