ApplicationsHi,
As the iPhone was stolen I doubt you are using the same number. That will be more about educating your Contacts to the new Number.
That said it will pay to deregister the iPhone as then they will get an alert saying "Not Registered with iMessages" if they specifically send to the iPhone Number. Those sent to your name will be a bit harder to check as it could default to iPhone Number or Apple ID.

May 11, 2016 9:30 PM in response to Ferd IIby EliasHansen,I've tried this and it didn't for some reason work... it's supposed to work, but there might be some deeper problem rooted in the phone itself -- Thank you though, this did get me in touch with Apple Support

May 13, 2016 12:21 PM in response to EliasHansenby EliasHansen,So I'm trying to deregister it via https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage
But when I ask them to text me a code to enter the website, the code doesn't come until days later! Even when I tried it with a friends' iPhone... What is there to be done???
