Q: Moving any Archive into a new folder converts it to 68.3bMB??

Started moving a bunch of existing Archives into new folders, then discovered that once they were in the new folder, they were greyed out in FCP's Media Import and wouldn't load. Then after moving them back out of the folder, discovered they wouldn't load into FCP anymore. And just now discovered that after moving the Archives - every single Archive I moved is now 68.3 MB - not the 1 to 7 GB they used to be. So there's something really wrong going on here. Anybody have any ideas? Anybody run into the same problem?

Final Cut Pro X, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

WWhere are the archives? Where exactly are you moving them to? What drive? How is it formatted?

Archives are on my fw Lacie BU/Archives hd.

I've moved existing Archives into a new Folder within the existing Archives folder.

They were dragged into the new Folder using iMac desktop.

The format is Final Cut Camera Archive As in  (name).fcarch

HHow is the drive formatted? If the copies are on the same drive the application should be using hard links, which will make odd file sizes show up.

The Archive HD is Mac OS Extended.

Don't understand what a hard link is - or how to use it to copy Archives, tho.

And can I undo what's happened to the resized Archives?

Something strange is happening. What are the folder names? Where are the archives? Post screenshots if you can.

Here's a screen shot. The problem Archives are the Carolina ones. I copied them into a Carolina folder then, when they wouldn't load, took them back out and trashed the Carolina folder. In the process, they got converted to 68.3 MB

Also, as I recall, sometimes - as in the DaveHse folder here, I have been able to sucessfully merge two Archives into one new folder.

Seems strange to me as well.

SSorry.  Don't know why this would happen. Notice it's a Time Machine drive. What's it backing up? There's also a second Time Machine drive. I never use Time Machine drives for anything but TM. I know it dies weird things with FCP libraries. Maybe it's all bundles.

    Thanks Tom

Never occurred to me that my TimeMachine might be a problem. Since you asked tho, it's backing up my iMac files. And seems to be doing that fine

What I'm hearing from you is that I'd do well to move my Archives out of the Time Mach/Archives HD .

    But first, a question;

My Time Mach/Archives HDs are actually one partitioned 3 TB HD - 1TB for an older, overloaded TimeMach, 2TB for more

    recent TimeMach backups and Archives.

So would it make any sense to erase the 1TB segment and move my Archives into that segment?

Or erase the old TimeMach in 1 TB and start a brand new TimeMach there.

Or would I be better off moving Archives over to the 3TB B drive. It's currently being used to backup my projects kept in 3TB A (Keeping the iMac free for working on Apps.)

Or should I spring for yet another HD?

    What would you do?

I would copy the old 1TB Time Machine somewhere as a backup. You can always pull files out of the TM structure event if you don't use the TM restore software. Wipe the 1TB partition and copy the archives onto it. once they're confirmed in place and verified in FCP, then erase them from the 2TB TM partition. That's probably what I would do at this stage,

    Thanks again Tom.

It's great being able to reach out to someone who knows what they're doing.

Will let you know how it all works out.
