First, the only version of El Capitan available is 10.11.4, second, what do you think are the compatibility issues? I'm not aware of any. Perhaps you can offer them up.

There were some initial compatibility issues between El Capitan 10.11(.0) and Office 2016 these were addressed by the 10.11.1 update for El Capitan and also update(s) from Microsoft for Office 2016.

However as Lanny was implying the current version of El Capitan is now 10.11.4 which is the version you should be using and is the only version you can download from the Mac App Store.

Saying all the above this does not mean El Capitan 10.11.4 and the latest Office 2016 which is now I believe 15.21.1 are completely perfect. All software has bugs, this is because it is complex and written by fallible human beings. (To err is human.)

Sadly some Microsoft bugs are extremely old and may never be fixed, for example recently in these forums there was discussion about Microsoft Office still not supporting file paths longer than about 250 characters in length even though Mac OS X itself can and does support much, much longer file paths. In this case it is down to Microsoft imposing an unnecessary limit because Windows cannot support file paths longer than 260 characters. This of course should not affect Office on Mac but Microsoft are stupid. There was another bug in Excel which was finally fixed in Excel 2016 but that was twenty-seven years after the bug was first introduced!

Just today, Microsoft updated Office 2016 to version 15.22.

This is an incremental updated that requires version 15.19.1 to be already installed.

If El Capitan and Office 2016 are both up to date on your system, you should have no issues at all. I've been using Office 2016 since it came out (the boxed version, not Office 365). As mentioned, there were some ugly issues with the initial perpetual license version, but those were almost all cleared up in the 15.15 Office 2016 update. It's only gotten better and more stable since then. I use it daily with no problems.

Many thanks, Kurt; this is the answer for which I was searching...without success in the Microsoft  and Apple Knowledge Bases.
