Do you use a Mac or Windows PC?  If Windows, what version?

Watch the iPod's screen when you connect it to your computer.  Does it say "Do not disconnect" or give other indication of a connection?  Or does it only show the battery charging symbol?  Or does it not react at all to being connected?

If you have not already, do a Reset (restart) on the iPod

Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support  (see section iPod with a click wheel)

If you only see the battery charging symbol on the iPod screen when you connect it, there is a power connection but no data connection.  There are separate "pins" on the dock connector for power and data.  The pins for power are connecting, but the ones for data are not.

One possibility is a faulty USB docking cable.  To rule out faulty cable, try a different cable (if you have one), or connect the current cable do another Apple device, to confirm it's working properly.

Another possibility is a faulty dock connector on the iPod.  Shine a flashlight into the dock connector, to look for any obvious damage, corrosion, dust build-up, or debris.  It could be worn out from use, and no longer making proper contact.

    Dear Kenichi,

I have the same issue as described by the other user. After resetting the Ipod Nano 2nd gen as per your kind advice, it is connecting (it shows "does not disconnect") and I can see it and access it in finder (which is already a relief) but can still not find it in I Tunes. I am using a Mac Book Pro, with OS Maverick 10.9.5 (have been reluctant to upgrade to El Capitan given many bad reviews I have seen) and I Tunes 12.4.1.6.

I have checked the steps on support but it does not seem to address the issue (I have no 3rd party security software).

I would be very grateful for any further help you could provide.

The issue was solved (possibly after I again restarted the computer), I can now see the Ipod in Itune!
