Q: I need a real simple accounting program.

I have always used Quicken for accounting, but when I brought my MBPro up to a 10.8.5, the Quicken could not be accepted.

I only do  income and outgo. I don't need anything else. Real Simple. Thanks for help.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Search the App Store, MacUpdate, Google, DuckDuck Go & Bing.  Read the reviews to see what others are saying about the software's simplicity.

    I was using Quicken 2004.

The Lion Compatible Quicken Mac 2007 says:

File conversion is not possible for Quicken 2004 for Mac and prior versions. File conversion is only possible for Quicken for Mac 2005, 2006, 2007, and transactional import for Quicken Essentials for Mac.

I do have the file backed up on time machine, but when I went there and tried to open, it wouldn't, I guess because of the update of mac.

Is there any place else on the computer that might open the Time Machine backups?

    Thanks for time.

I have no experience with Quicken, Arudi.

But it seems to me that only if you had the right application on your current system, trying to open your Quicken 2004 on your Time Machine would not work.

Based on this link I think you might be out of luck:

"Can I import my Quicken for Mac 2004 or prior data?

File conversion is not possible for Quicken 2004 for Mac and prior versions. File conversion is only possible for Quicken for Mac 2005, 2006, 2007, and transactional import for Quicken Essentials for Mac."

    See also more here

and here where some alternate routes are suggested.  But it does not look easy.

    https://qlc.intuit.com/questions/155689-converting-from-quicken-2004-to-quicken- 2007-mac

    Search Intuit here

    https://qlc.intuit.com/search?utf8=✓&q=mac+2004&button=

    and ask someone.

If your data is that critical - there is usually a way by an enterprising person, but it might cost you and you might have to surrender your data to said person to 'convert' to another format or version.

You wrote earlier "I only do  income and outgo. I don't need anything else. Real Simple. Thanks for help.

Is it critical to have access to data that is years old?  Could you scan end of year reports and convert selected chunks to another application?

    Thank you so much.

I am just out of luck.

I needed the last two years because it has lots of information about every entry and goes to an accountant for court documentation.

I have found a substitute software that will probably work for me and I will just start over from two years ago.

So nice to know people like you are out there for us.

Arudi, you are more than welcome!

The reason that there are people like me out here is because I expect that there isn't a computer user of some years here who has not had to struggle with either migrating data, converting files, trying to fit data into a new version of some application.  And years ago I found people who helped me!

    PS

On your situation - depending upon how your the paper copies of your files look, you can do some amazing things using scanners and OCR technology or grabbing data from files (paper to PDF) using Adobe Acrobat Pro or something similar and bring that old data into your new application, Arudi.

YOU ARE NOT OUT OF LUCK:

Do you have access to a PowerMac or an Intel Mac running Snow Leopard?  If not, let me know, there are other options to complete the following information which I assembled for a recent post:

Quicken 2007 for Mac has been continuously upgraded for OS X compatibility, including Yosemite and now El Capitan.

You can obtain Quicken 2007 for Mac for $15 using the Intuit online chat function.

Use the chat feature for Quicken for Mac: Quicken 2007 for Lion: Shopping and Buying: Buying Quicken on the Quicken Support website page.

Be sure to use the Online Upgrade feature once you install it; as of this writing it is version 16.2.3

If you are using Quicken 2004 or earlier, you first need to convert the data file to Quicken 2005/6/7 data format while still running on a PPC Mac, or in Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac:

Download Quicken 2006 (PPC) from Intuit:

    https://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/patching/quicken-2006-manual-updates--ma c-/GEN82200.html

Open your data file in Quicken 2006 (PPC) and it will automatically convert it to a Quicken 2005/6/7 data file.

AVOID Quicken 2015 for Mac as it is a misleading upgrade of Quicken Essentials for Mac (and not Quicken 2007), which is generally loathed by all real Quicken for Mac 2007 and previous users!  I purchased Quicken 2016 for Mac, when offered a discount by Intuit, and was generally underwhelmed by its capabilities compared to my continued use of Quicken 2007.
