Q: iOS 9 music sorting options are AWFUL

everything sorts by album artist now which has completely ruined my library's sorting. Why on earth was the option to disable sorting by album artist removed? Seriously, what logic went into the decision? Half my music is classical and I have to totally reorganize everything to fix it - every composer and album has multiple artists listed and it's impossible to find anything now.

Also, what happened to being able to customize your own tabs??? I will never, EVER use the connect tab or the radio tab so why can't I change those to sorting options like before? Instead, everything is cramped into one tab. It's absolutely killing me.

And finally, the recently added thing is totally useless, and it takes up half the screen AND you can't scroll through alphabetically while it's on the screen. And I know what's on my phone, I PUT IT THERE. And organized it too, until that went out the window...

Seriously, this is the most ill-conceived and limiting update.

Incredibly frustrated music geek,

After disabling Apple Music, go to Settings > General > Restrictions.

    Enable Restrictions.

    Turn off Apple Music Connect.

    Talk about obscure!

Seems to be no way of adding other tabs in, e.g. Genres. Woeful lack of customisability.

I also don't like the new Music App.

I might have found a partial workaround for this (it works when you want to show all songs by an artist --without songs being divided by albums and you not being able to see what song is in each album-- or by genre).

    1. Open the search box by clicking on the magnifying on the upper right corner

    2. type the name of the artist. Results will be sorted in different categories (Artist/albums/songs). Instead of clicking on the name of the artist, click on songs.

    3. All the songs from that artist should now appear (without being divided by album).

The same goes for listing all songs by genre. I don't use composers, so not sure if it will help you.

    Cheers,

apple seems to be aggressively moving people to stream music rather than purchase it, as the agility of itunes player on iphone is getting more and more restrictive with every iteration. I have three ancient ipods that work 100x better than the massively more-expensive iphone, so it's really sad.

i would just like to be able to load a few playlists to my phone and then sort by "song" to play all the songs in the list together. Every other pod does it; iphone does not. I have to play the songs in each playlist separately.

Not sure what you mean? I play music via Playlist all the time. Select Playlists at the bottom of the screen, select "All Playlists", select the one you want to play. Set it up to play once or to repeat.

If you are selecting "Songs", then you are tapping the "My Music" button. You need to be tapping the "Playlist" button.

    select playlists - check

    select all playlists - check

select the one you want to play - um, no - i want to play all of them together, noy choose one of them.

This is something fairly new in itunes. In the past, I could select all playlists, then list by song and all songs in the all playlists would show up.

    Not anymore.

As a workaround, I have to create one "dummy" playlist in itunes to dump everything into in hopes of sync-ing to the iphone, but i shouldn't have to jump through those hoops, imo

And I stay far away from My Music. If I want thousands upon thousands of songs in my library to choose from...

    well, i don't.

    But thanks for replying, Gail!

Well, your last sentence is a bit confusing. Are you indicating that you are using Apple Music?

i have never used apple music, nor do i plan to.

It seems to be a repository for anything I've ever purchased from itunes ever ever.

Many of which I'd gotten rid of after the purchase, but they still exist in the ether taunting me like bad prom photos

    OK, so:

    well, i don't.

If you are not using Apple Music, then if you only sync your Playlists to your device, then only the songs in those playlists will show up in My Music. If you see other music then swipe to the left to delete it. You won't see it again unless you download it from iCloud or you select it to be sync'd via iTunes. When you sync via iTunes do not select "All Music", but rather "Selected playlists, albums, artists, genre". Only the playlists that you select will be sync'd everything else will be removed.

Then, if you want to listen to all of the music on your Playlists, you would go to My Music, select the song you want to start with, slide up on the player to display the song info, select Shuffle if you wish (but not Repeat), and you should be able to do what you are indicating.

In iOS i'd just like to be able to sort by artist under Genres. As of now if you go to a specific genre it sorts by album title.

I have three questions on this topic. Perhaps you know the answers.

    1. How do I get iTunes on my iPhone to sort albums in the order they were on the CD? There are many works of music that require more than one CD. Since upgrading to iOS 9.3, some of these in my collection are sorting by the first track on multiple CDs, then the second track, etc. So, rather than playing a piece of music with several movements on three CDs that should be sorted in the order they were on the CDs, now they are sorted by the first tracks, then the second tracks...

How do I get iTunes to play them in the proper order?

    2. What happened to the artwork that was there before the upgrade? (It's still there in iTunes on my Mac.)

    3. How do I see the title of a piece? When I look at the title list of The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, it only shows "Nutcracker, Op. 71..." for every track. It should say something like "Nutcracker, Op.71, Act II, Tablequ 3. No. 12 Divertissement: D) Trepak (Russian Dance)." For a large collection of CDs of all the Mozart Piano Concertos, it just says "Piano Concerto No..." Well, since there are more than 2 dozen of them and each has 3 movements, just showing "Piano Concerto No..." makes the program rather useless if I want to find the second movement of Piano Concerto Number 18. I thought if I turned it sideways it would show the full listing, but that doesn't do anything. There must be a way to see the name of a piece of music. Right?

    Thank you for any assistance.

    1. See Grouping tracks into albums, in particular the section One cover for multi-disc album. The key is consistent use of album and sort album names together with correct disc and track numbers. Often the data from Gracenotes CDDB and even from the iTunes store isn't quite right for the best results.

    2. Which artwork where, after which upgrade of what? It is usually best to embed all artwork in your media files. (See Doug's script Re-Embed Artwork.) If your iPhone shows different art to iTunes, or none at all, then the remedy is usually to backup the device, restore as a new device, then restore the backup made earlier.

    3. Again, this is an area where careful thought needs to be given to what data to put in each field. You may find another of Doug's scripts Remove n characters useful for trimming the repeated information of each track title. For classical music I set the artist & album artist to the composer as I am more interested in this information than the performers. A method that I sometimes use for box sets is to ignore the artificial breaks caused by the limited CD size and create one album for each work with all its tracks in the correct order. For example I've taken the 4-disc recording of Purcell's Dido & Aeneas, King Arthur and The Fairy Queen and turned it into 3 individual albums (each with the same artwork) and I've taken the 3 disc Remains Of Tom Lehrer and reconstructed his 5 original albums, with their respective artwork, leaving the remaining bonus tracks under the box set cover.
